When did "ftw", or "for the win" start popping up? This goes with "ftl" too. It seems so many people are using that term on the internet recently. Where did it come from?

It annoys me.

I first noticed it on YTMND and in World of Warcraft. I see the term used those two places the most.

It started popping up right after somebody learned it bothers you. That was easily incentive enough for people around the net to start to use it at larger scale.

OH WOW LET'S TURN WTF BACKWARDS... BACKRONYM TIME!

Yeah, quite annoying. But then again, I use it sometimes.

But I'm quite annoying too.

However, I will agree with this post in 1 year.

It took me a while to figure what it meant and why everyone was saying "ftw". I never use it, and I find it rather annoying.

anyone remember a net game called acrophobia? had nothing to do with fear of heights. basically it gave you random letters and you had to come up with an acronym for it, then people voted for their favorite acronym. you'd get points based on how many votes you got plus bonus points for getting the highest # of votes.

it was awesome back in the day.

I don't.

The first time I saw ftw regularly used was here.

When in doubt, find the definition on UrbanDictionary.

lmao...

Quote:
FTW is an acronym that is commonly used by white supremacist, biker gangs, and social outcasts. It has many different interpretation depending where you stand on the ladder of society.

1. White supremacists interpretation of FTW is "Forever Trully White", indicating white pride. It's used as a billboard showing the world their belief that they are the "pure" blood. It is used by many racist gangs such as Skinheads, AB, NLR, etc. They usually will have "FTW" tattooed in a vesible area such as the hands/knuckles, forearms and neck.

2. The social outcasts, such as punks n' skins, (meaning the none racist skin which came out of the punk rock scene and originally trived in the ska and reagae scen) have a much different interpretation of the acronym FTW. To them it represents the ultimate **** everyone. Used as sign of independence, and backed by the words "**** The World" which can be taken in many ways.

A. The first as in **** societys rules, I'll live my life my own way, with true freedom.

B. And the second interpretation is that you just don't give a **** about the world, nothing that doesn't directly affect you matters and if it does affect you it still doesn't matter, you just don't give a **** about the world, therefore their mentality is,**** em' all. Also used by a Psychobilly band Tiger Army in song titled "FTW" on the album TIGER ARMY II: POWER OF MOONLITE
released by Hellcat Records on July 24, 2001.

3. Also used by many bikers and biker gangs as a sign of rebelion. Used by gangs such as The Hells Angels. They also have a two part interpretation,to the bikers it means:

A. Forever Two Wheels, indicating that your a biker tell you die.

B. Also "**** The World" is the second (or first, however you want to look at it) meaning behind FTW. Since bikers traditionally are outcasts of society. Forced to do things on their own, they have developed a stong since of independence and not haveing to answer to anyone makes them free. Since these outcasts tend to lack communication and people skills that are required to function in society they develop a hatred for the world that doesn't understand them.

FTW is commonly used as marking of gang affilation.

I think the use of FTW began around the middle of last year, but it seems to have boomed in the last couple months.

Stupid acronyms FTW! :p

I can't believe no one's mentioned Hollywood Squares... As I understand, that's where "For the win" came from. People on the net started using it, and shortened it to ftw. The fact that it is the same as "**** the world" and others is just coincidence.

That's my take anyway.

Every time I get the urge to say statements of the form 'X FTW!' I'm going to change them to the form 'X is swank!'.

Because swank is one damn underused word.

I was unaware of these other usages of FTW. I always thought it was just "For the win!"
