Here's the gist - Now, Futuremark has uncovered a very dangerous anti-piracy system Starforce is now using. This copy protection system installs a driver that runs at the highest level of access on the system, which gives it low level access to the PCs hardware and any drivers and processes. This driver runs regardless of whether the game runs; keeping an eye out for any suspicious activity such as attempting to copy a protected disc. If something suspicious is detected, it forces the PC to make an immediate reboot, regardless of any other applications running and whether or not the user has any unsaved work.

Nifty 'eh?

Thats just... Wow. I don't think I can buy another Ubisoft game (they usually use SF). I don't want some crappy anti-piracy driver deep inside Windows watching my every move, possibly degrading my PC's performance.

I actually looked this up earlier today, and both Chaos Theory and RS: Lockdown are using Starforce :(

It would be interesting if they overlooked the possibility of the user simply making an iso image of a disc and reburning it instead of copying the disc directly.

It would be more nteresting if they overlooked the possibility of the user(s) ALWAYS finding a way to copy and share the files and programs they just dont want to (or have to) to pay for.

It would be more interesting if they decided to just liquidate their company and pay out to the shareholders and then start selling fine wines and cheese out of the back of Wal-Mart... but that's highly unlikely.

Almost? It installs itself without asking me and takes controll of my computer. That's what I call malware.
I heard that they don't want to put it on the American version of Spellforce 2, because Starforce already produced problems with the Spellforce 2 Demo.

I just hope they don't put it on Gothic 3...
Sorry for the lousy German

This is sick. Remind me not to buy any games by Ubisoft.

Apparently Galactic Civilizations came out with Starforce protection, GC II didn't.

In response the Starforce guys put links to torrents with Galactic Civilizations II up on their website for a while.

...wow.

Thank God I don't have a single one of those games.

That's absolutely ridiculous.

To be fair, it doesn't exactly "take control" of your computer, nor does it self-replicate, so it's not really a virus. But I would certainly call it malware.

But yeah, Starforce can suck it. Good thing all those Ubisoft and Starforce games I play aren't really Starforce protected...anymore.
