I've been hearing more and more that employers/schools/the government or whoever is interested in finding more information about an individual are turning more and more to frighteningly rudimentary internet searches.
You know, googling someone, looking at someone's myspace/facebook profile. I've heard that employers look at things like this to determine whether or not to hire people and that law enforcement uses things like this to track people for breaking the law. I'm not sure if any of this is legal, but if no one knows WHY they got passed over by an employer or WHY the cops just randomly showed up during a party with underage drinking (which, by the way, if you plan on doing... DONT post about it on the internet and show pictures of kids kegging, that's just stupid and no one is impressed).
I was being paranoid and googled my name. Luckily, it's a very common name and there were only a few things that related to me on pages and pages of the search results (a webpage I made for my computing class and my band). My facebook profile is pretty generic and my myspace is just stupid and talks about Dracula... so I think I'm in the clear there.
Anyways, google your name. Are you surprised by how much information you can find by doing a 5 minute check? Would an employer/anyone else be given a good impression by your facebook/myspace/livejournal? Just some stuff to think about/debate.
I was going to do a poll, but I figure that stymies discussion.
