Is Australia a Continent?
2006-03-28, 2:36 PM #1
After reading the thread about the Commonwealth games, I was reminded of a debate I have had with several of my classmates at school. They claim that Australia is a continent, and one of their common factoids is that Australia is the only country that is a continent in the world. I say it is not a continent, because if it was, what does that make New Zealand, and many other Pacific islands. I went on to say that the contient is known as either Australasia or Oceania. They continued to argue, saying they'd never heard of such a thing.

So, what is the reality? Could Spork or another Massassian Aussie confirm the truth?

No, Australasia is a continent, which is australia and the surrounding islands and land mass until you reach asia.

Australia is just an illusion and doesn't really exist. These "aussies" are just Brits who fell ill.

I have proof!

I've always heard that Australia was it's own continent. It wasn't until just recently (about a year or so) that i've heard the term Oceania.

Which says nothing of the validity of either statement, but wether or not it's correct, Australia is definitely the more common term where I'm from.
Moo.

The way I've always understood it is Australiasia and Oceania are just vague geographical regions like 'Middle East' or 'South-East Asia', while Australia is the actual continent. When used in reference to a continent 'Australia' refers to more than just the country the Commonwealth Of Australia, but the surrounding area also.

Yeah, sounds more like "Indo-China" or "Middle East" to me than the name of an actual continent.

Oceana is the name of the region, Australia is the name of the continent.

If Europe gets to be its own continent, rather than just a little part of Asia, then Australia gets to be a continent too.

But I was taught over the years that it is indeed its own contenint

I was taught in school that we (Australians) live in a unique place, in that it is the worlds largest island, and the worlds smallest continent, and that we are also the only continent that is one country.

For those (like me) who might suspect that Greenland is larger....

Greenland: 836,109 sq. mi. (2,166,086 km^2)
Australia: 2,967,909 sq. mi. (7,686,850 km^2)

Usually map projections make it seem like Greenland is significantly larger than Australia.

They always taught at school Australia is a continent. I have had no reason to suspect that's false information.

Yeah. They have to fill in space when they take a sphere and make it a rectangle. Greenland is about the same size as Mexico.

It's usually more about maintaining shapes than filling space.

I always understood that Australia and the surrounding islands (including NZ) were one continent, based on the tectonic plate they are on. This is referred to as various names - though saying Australia (the island) is its own continent, seperate of NZ is false.

My word is hardly gospel on this topic, but yeah, the way I understand it there's the country 'The Commonwealth Of Australia' which is what people understandably shorten to 'Australia' or 'that big island down-under', and then there's 'Australia' in reference to the continent which includes New Zealand, Papua New Guinea etc.

Of course I've had some Kiwis try and explain to me that they are their own continent. But of course they were extremely drunk...
