Jesus. 64 gigs. That's ridiculous. I wonder how much those things cost to manufacture.

Christ. I have two relatively outdated laptops, one with 3 GB and one with 20 GB. That small thing has 64 GB. Wow.

While it's very impressive, it isn't THAT shocking. iPods are getting smaller and smaller and yet at the same time they are holding more and more on them. While 64GB is impressive, it isn't $5,000 impressive. That's just stupid.
Think while it's still legal.

No no, this is THAT shocking. Supposedly only 32 gigs of Flash was supposed to be available for Laptop harddrives from Samsung around this time. This is pure flash, not microdrive. This is "Retarded Hot"

Pointless
2006-03-29, 6:02 PM #6
It may seem a bit pointless now, but I can see it being used for tons of things in the future. Like I said before, cool, not 5k cool.

That's amazing - makes me wonder how large hard drives will be in a few years..or if we'll end up going to a different type of mass storage altogether.
woot!

The product is fairly pointless for most people, but the technology is extremely attractive and sexy. If you can fit that much flash into such a small space, once we get it economical Flash HDD's that take almost no power, produce almost no heat or noise, and take up almost no space will be easily manufactured.

Sexy.

True, my 2 gb flash drive/mp3 player cost about $135. I just can't see spending that much when I can just lug around an external HDD.

I have to agree with Victim Van Dork's original post. This is awesome [I want one :-(] but not that unbelievable.

I just thought it was impractical to sell something like that fr $5,000. I mean, only millionair business men would you em. Strange thing. But in 10 years everyone will have em around their neck.

How is it not unbelievable when only a few months ago there were mere RUMORS of 16gb Flash HDDs. Now they have 64gb of flash on a stick the size of my middle finger. That's quite the unexpected development.

Not to mention the early adoption of this product will drive them to make even bigger drives, and the increased data density will cut costs dramatically on the lower-end drives. Give it a year or two and these will go for $400.

Now what about speed? Is this flash chip going to be up to snuff to match speeds with hard drives?

I was always under the impression that flash memory was rather slow.

How'd you get that impression? Flash memory is stupidly fast.

Yepp. There should be a reason why it's called flash. ;-)
CM, perhaps you just always had some USB 1.1 devices.

I thought they called it flash because it walked around the park at night in a trench coat with nothing on underneath.

Not necessarily...I mean, that 16 GB Samsung drive was said to be as fast as a Raptor, but it's not as fast as RAM like a lot of people think. Particularly, write operations are relatively slow because entire blocks need to be erased ("flashed") and rewritten.

Doest NVRAM have a limited number of read/write cycles before it stops working? I thought i read that somewhere. Wouldnt make great hard drives if it does.

It's not as fast as RAM, true, but it's still much faster than straight hard disk drives. And honestly, though writing's an important aspect, how much do you write to your harddrive versus how much you read from it?
