PC companies are ****es

I'm doing an assignment for my System Justification module. Basically we have to say what kind of pc a company will need. I'm doing a hotel who needs one for a booking system..
I said that they needed at most a 500mhz computer with 128mb of RAM and win98.

All was going good until I got to the part about getting real life costs for a system of this type. It's impossible. Nowhere sells them. And thats when I realised..

PC companies are real *****es, by not selling old cheap pc's they're forcing people who dont know how to build their and know nothing about computers to buy an almost top of the range computer. For example, dell do not seem to sell computers under 2ghz.

So anyone who wants to buy a simple old computer for using microsoft office has to buy a almost top of the line PC unless they build their own.

Anyway, right now i'm knocking up a fake dell page because all I need is a couple of screenshots of the websites to show the costs. Unless someone can point me to a site which does sell older computers (New ones, with actual definite costs, so not ebay) and they have to sell in pounds sterling.

You'd have to look at a local store for something like that.

I did something similar for my e-Commerce class. The teacher was a bloody idiot. We basically just took the source code of the site and the images and used it. She never knew the difference. Got us a C because we didn't have a few of the things she wanted. I don't care. After we finished I deleted all files associated with it. Not to cover my tracks, simply becuase we didn't need it anymore and it was cluttering my harddrive. It was probably wrong to do it, but I hated that teacher with a passion, and I sure as hell wasn't going to spend a week working on something for her that was going to be deleted 2 days afterwards.

But see, even nowadays you can buy a Dell computer with a 2.4Ghz P4 and 256 (maybe even 512 if they offer a deal) for about 400 bucks after rebate. If you want a system like 500Mhz P2 and 128MB of RAM, you are going to ahve to build it yourself.

If you don't have any extra spare parts, you are still going to have to buy the motherboard, buy the cpu, buy a hard drive, mouse, keyboard, etc.

you can find lots of old stuff on e-bay.

Systems that are < 1 ghz can be acquired for well under $100 even with shipping.

(I once saw a comp on there for 99 cents.... It was an old p166, with 32 mb ram, 2.5 gb hard drive, etc. Good enough for win95 (or maybe win98 if you want to push the envelope) or linux, at any rate. Swap in a larger hard drive and you would have a decent server if you load a server configured install of red hat.)

We need to get together a "get vinny a new computer" fund. I really hate seeing such a great vinny with such a crappy computer

Is there anywhere in your community which holds computer swap meets? We have them every Sunday all over town down here, there are always heaps of crappy old systems for well under $100.

Open up the classifieds section of your newspaper.

I can usually find some PII's and PIII's full systems for like $200-$300 bucks including moniter.

You should go to pricewatch.com and go to their specials section. I'm sure there are tons of places interested in selling older hardware at decent prices.

However, I would recommend getting some duron 1.3s as they'd likely be cheaper and faster than what you recommended.

If you think about it, it's not a whole lot cheaper to buy an old system compared to a new one..since they're so inexpensive already, you won't have to worry about an upgrade anytime soon, and reliability/support/parts shouldn't be an issue.

pfft... I ran a comp with those same specs with WIN XP.. Seriously. It was slow (ie, clicking on the start menu would cause it to stall for a few seconds before opening), but it worked and was quite stable.
