Artist wanted for NeS comic

The art style changes because of what Ford said (variation of traditional materials to graphics tablet, which he was just learning) and that the comics up there are over a span of 2-3 years, so a jump in style is due to the time difference. The only strip I personally ever thought his art looked bad was this one which was actually done mostly with a mouse.

That can be excused. But I've seen it happen in the same comic strip.

My comment was based off on the few I saw, which were not his best, to say the least. Some were particularly good, especially this one : http://nes.sorrowind.net/strips/NeSi_020.jpg

Geb, msn : jp_laliberte@hotmail.com.

I'm showing up tonight (in 4 or 5 hours from now), it would be fun to chat about this. And more. <.<

Some quick drawings, and inked.

Each is a different style. Middle is trying to replicate the original.

Ford asked me that it would help if I requested something more specific from sample art other than "random NeS stuff," which is understandable. So if you don't just want to work with material already shown in the comic or whatever, here's the material that would basically be the next strip in the comic:

Quote:
Miss Fire: Popcorn!

Galvatron: Hey! That's mine!

Miss Fire: I'll get you some more later.

*Miss Fire runs down the stairs to the rail/barrier between the stadium seating and the Arena fighting ground, which is covered in little green blobs, which have begun invading/attacking the audience in the Arena. She shakes the bag along the way, getting the attention of the green blobs.*

*Miss Fire then hurls the bag of popcorn out of the Arena. The green blobs leap in pursuit.*

Little blobs: Popcornpopcornpopcornpopcorn...

*The Arena is empty of the green blobs. Ares and Rob X stand stunned.*

Miss Fire: So you two going to get back to fighting, or am I going to have to get a refund?

Rob X: Oh yeah...

Ares: Right.

*Ares clocks Rob X in the face.*

You can see the original post here if you wish. There is a character profile of Gebohq here if you wish to take a stab with that. As for Ares, Rob X, Miss Fire, and Ares, I can supply information about them if wanted.

I'll try to take a shot at it. But I would need the other characters descriptions that you offered.

Ares, Rob X and Miss Fire have all appeared in the comic thusfar, but I'll give a description of them here too:

Ares[/b] (first appearance here, good rough here)
Greek god of war. He looks a lot like you'd expect a Greek god of war to look like -- traditional Greek war armor, tall, very built, tan... his black hair is slicked back and he wears sunglassses. He likes starting fights and driving fast cars. He's not really the quick or witty type, though he's certainly loud and dramatic.

Rob X (first (correct) appearance here, good rough here)
Appears to be your everyday skater-type guy, though in actuality he's the equivilant of Death. He usually wears jeans and a black shirt with a red X over it, and looks to be either vaguely Middle Eastern and/or a farmer-type in complexion. (In the comic, he is wearing a set of headphones as well). He likes skateboarding, among other things.

Miss Fire[/b] (first appearance here, good rough here)
She is a medic with military training. She is the sister and frequent customer of Enchilada Man (though no one would be able to guess they were related). She has fiery blonde hair and tends to wear combat boots, camo pants, and a Ripley-esque white top. She's never found without a gun by her side.

Hopefully that'll suffice :)

Overlord: just wanted to say that I think the one on the right looks best.

Jep: Dunno if I'll be on while you're around. We'll talk at some point though. :)

Also, I agree that the comic strip you linked was his best. Towards the end, we found out that his "rough" style looked better than his "better" style, and encouraged using that style. In part, I think his later stuff was better too because he wasn't restricted by having a rough from me, like I had sent him for previous strips. Like me, he was pretty lazy though, which is partly why there are strips like the last one that's up. ;)

Keep them coming people. I'll stop asking for submissions say... after Sunday, April 23. Nothing set in stone, mind you, it's just I know that having a date helps motivate some people.

OK, I have henceforth concluded that I suck righteously at pictures with any content in. It's worse than the evil nun guy I tried at one point.

Seriously. It looked like an evil nun. And it was supposed to be a guy. :(

And I also suck at regularity, so someone else'd be better.

I'm out, I dont think I'll be able to get this one done, I'm just having too many problems trying to draw scenes where things are happening, and I'm getting frustrated. This is what I had so far.

I'm totally NeS-illiterate, sorry, but WOAH @ Jep's art on 1st page. You could do this stuff for a living. Seriously, that Sith (or at least, I assume he's Sith) with the purple lightsaber looks absolutely pro.

The face drawings are also bloody brilliant.

Go Jep, yours was way better than my attempt. Hope you get the position.
2006-04-14, 8:57 PM #55
Heh, I just realized that I'll definately need to be super-specific with whomever I end up picking at the artist. Whoops. Ah well -- art and style and such things look good as a rough, Jep.

In case anyone was interested, here's what I should have mentioned (based on the version Jep did):
  • Miss Fire's "Popcorn!" is meant more as a spontaneous idea and less of a Mentos moment.
  • The swiping popcorn panel is likely too close up (a cleaner/color version might negate that).
  • Her toss is a bit girly. The idea is meant to look like a baseball throw, because...
  • Miss Fire is meant to be throwing the popcorn into outer space, where the blobs jump incredibly high in pursuit and/or file out the normal exits.
  • Still not entirely sure why Rob X (I presume) is looking devious instead of "realization dawning back on him" that he's in a fight, but that was added on the spot by me to "end" the strip better anyway, so... *shrug*

Just to emphasis, you didn't do anything wrong, Jep -- it was a very fine draft. I just need to realize now that I'll definately have to be a lot more specific with the new artist.

[*]Miss Fire's "Popcorn!" is meant more as a spontaneous idea and less of a Mentos moment. You'll have to be more of specific on this one, "Mentos moment" are a spontaneous idea. I could eliminate the gasp+ligthbulb picture, and have her just go for the popcorn, but I personally feel that removes the dynamic impact of the idea, probably will end up making her look hungry. [*]The swiping popcorn panel is likely too close up (a cleaner/color version might negate that). I tried a few different approaches: a sideways view, a zoomed out view, but they ended up taking too much space and/or looking plain. This gets the idea through without hogging up too much space. Leaves room for a better view of her running down the stairs and for the text bubbles. [*]Her toss is a bit girly. The idea is meant to look like a baseball throw, because... Yea, agreed. It was really meant more as a softball pitch really but it didn't come out quite right. [*]Miss Fire is meant to be throwing the popcorn into outer space, where the blobs jump incredibly high in pursuit and/or file out the normal exits. Ugh, I personally feel that will leave readers saying "wtf" (in a bad way) no matter how thats illustrated. Not to mention that that is nearly impossible to illustrate little blobs jumping up into space right. lol. If you're head set I'll find a way though. Maybe having them sprout batwings or something. Grawwr [*]Still not entirely sure why Rob X (I presume) is looking devious instead of "realization dawning back on him" that he's in a fight, but that was added on the spot by me to "end" the strip better anyway, so... *shrug* The devious bit was added for more of a comical impact. RobX, "Oh yeah..." I'll use my mini scythe to chop him up and then... UGEHPMFFF!!! Knocked out by Mr. Ares. You know, like he's thinking he'll do this and that and have the edge on his opponent. What I definatly could do to add that feeling to that cell was add the little scythe blade in front of his face like he's smiling down at it. By the way, I'm not happy with the last cell, it lacks impact. Too boring.[/*]

It's been brought to my attention that the artist may wish to redesign the look of the website itself, if brought on as the artist. This is perfectly fine. Any suggestions/submissions will be looked over my CoolMatty and myself (possibly one or two others as well), but keep in mind that we'll be looking for a few things, some which relate to the comic itself:
  • I almost forgot... your web design MUST WORK IN INTERNET EXPLORER! I don't care how much it sucks, I want it to be able to work in that browser!
  • USER-FRIENDLY! No matter how cool it may be, if the navigation menu, news text, comic strip itself, and such are made difficult to see/use, it's a no go.
  • The navigation menu (where one can view the comic, archives, news and the like) must be clear and present on the page at all times. The reader should not have to click the back button to get to a previous page at any point. (The junkyard section of NeSi is currently missing this quality).
  • The news must be the first thing to be seen on the comic. I used to be a big opposer to this, but practically speaking, we don't update frequently or regularly enough to warrant letting the readers ignore the news page. Sad truth :(
  • The comic must be 700 pixels wide. It's length can be variable, but we usually aim to make the strip square or normal page-like in length. (Some of the junkyard work needs to be resized to fit this).
  • The background must be black, and the design of the site must be so that the comic panels appear to be "floating" on the background. (Hopefully this point is clear enough.)
  • Black, gold/yellows and dark greens are primarily the colors we're aiming to use for the site. It's meant to be a mix of our homage to The Massassi Temple and to a classic epic/fantasy book feel (like "The Neverending Story" by Michael Ende of which the 80's movie was based.)

There are likely other aspects, even if not from CoolMatty, of which I forgot. Those, however, should be the major points to keep in mind.

Keep in mind that, while we're certainly open for new ideas on the website itself, we're more or less happy with what we got as of now. As CoolMatty can tell you, I'm pretty picky about web design, so keep that in mind. :)

I would, but I'm currently short a scanner. Plus, it's about half done because I gave up on it, which means four very rough pencil sketched panels.

Only because it was a single panel. With awkward colouring. And done on an Oekaki.

I suck at multi-panel comics. You really don't want to see it. It looks crap.

I'm trying to get someone to draw TLTE, but all my artist friends are failing. It's probably because (up until he swaps sides to the good guys) I saw him in a wide-brim fedora as well as the spy get-up, which is making him look too much like Darkwing Duck.
