iraq update...
2006-04-16, 2:35 AM #1
Ok well I am about midway through my deployment and you know taking pictures and documenting the whole thing helps pass time. Just thought I'd show you guys whats up... not much really but i guess its worth a look. The huge fires are from insurgents blowing up pipelines about 4-5 miles out from our FOB. The smoke fills the entire sky causing wicked electric storms and rains acid rain.... its pretty crazy haha kind of 'hellish' almost... but that just makes it all the more fascinating. you kind of have to be there to see it... but other than that all my other pics are of the cities which are run down and full of trash. the people do like us here though, and the kids treat us like heroes jeering us on whereever they see us, whether were in a bird flying over there farm land or passing by them when they are herding there sheep they are always giving us thumbs up and smiling which is kickass.

Yeah, it looks cool, but then imagine that it is right beside your house. :)

Great pics, Snoop. Good luck and keep us posted!

*Everything that's been said*

And I'll say it again: That smoke is awesome.
I had a blog. It sucked.

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Wait, doesn't the thumbs-up potentially mean the same thing as flipping someone the bird in Arabic countries?

Quote:
Iraqis are giving passing Americans the "thumbs up" sign, which the troops interpret as a symbol of support. But many veteran travelers insist that the gesture is a crass Middle Eastern insult. How should coalition forces take those skyward thumbs?

Depends on how media savvy those Iraqi bystanders may be. It's true that "thumbs up" traditionally translates as the foulest of Iraqi insults—the most straightforward interpretation is "Up yours, pal!" The sign has a similarly pejorative meaning in parts of West Africa, Russia, Australia, Iran, Greece, and Sardinia, according to Roger E. Axtell's book Gestures: The Do's and Taboos of Body Language Around the World. So, it's possible that the ostensibly cheering Iraqis are, in fact, silently voicing their displeasure.

But it's also possible that they understand the Western meaning of upturned thumbs, an explanation that the Army's Defense Language Institute subscribes to. According to a recent DLI manual on international gestures, after the first Gulf War "Middle Easterners of the Arabian Peninsula adopted this hand movement, along with the OK sign, as a symbol of cooperation toward freedom." Iraqi civilians may have noted this shifting meaning, perhaps via TV reports.

I'm guessing you have to look at their facial expressions to see what the "thumps-up" means?

It's possible that it is something rude but it sounds more like the media trying to twist things around.
2006-04-17, 11:34 AM #13
You could tell by looking at their faces. People don't smile supportively and flip you off. Likewise people don't glower grumpily and give supportive gestures either.

Do you have a high-res version of that pipeline picture? That one's amazing!
2006-04-17, 11:50 AM #14
I really wish I was over there.... seriously. Not so much for the whole army part, but because that part of the world is just beautiful. Well, and I'd like to shoot some insurgents in the face. I won't lie.

Thanks for the photographs- again, it's good to see something straight from the proverbial horse's mouth for once. Well, stay safe out there. (As safe as is reasonably possible in a war zone, anyway.) Hope the chemical/radioactive exposure isn't serious, and best wishes on a safe and timely return home.

"shoot some insurgents in the face"? thats quite an ignorant/imature attitude to have about an issue as serious as that.

Why, exactly? Were he there, insurgents would either try to blow him up, or kidnap him then eventually killing him. Shooting insurgents in the face is a legitimate way of defending one's self when you find yourself in a part of the world where there are insurgents who want to kill you for no really good reason.

It's exactly what I said. Insurgents are terrorists. Terrorists are involved in the attack. Directly or indirectly.

yesterday i was out and the Iraqi Army gunned down 3 insurgents... 1 dead (i wasnt there and the IA is corrupt, I was just backup, cant ask questions). We rolled in as backup for them and all i saw was a little safehouse at a gas station that was shot the **** out, but not nearly as bad as what they did to the precious BMW 525i... The car from what i could tell was in awesome condition before a few hundred .50 cal rounds went through it. I was looking at it and the engine block look mostly salvagable since they are popular car around in Iraq but then the IA lit it on fire. I was with a green beret, he took the picture of me standing in front of it. I have a shot of him as well. He was a badass, his body armor was different along with his uniform and his whole weapon system was customized with an entirely different upper reciever that wasn't gas operated but was made by h&k and used a pushrod system. He said it could fire a 1000 rounds with no lube and be perfect where as my M4 gets dirty after 1 clip since the gas fills the chamber coating everything in carbon. Well heres some pics.

Awesome pics. Pity the IA comes off as such ****tards, at least on my end. Are they corrupt all together or just for the most part?

A friend of mine living in Kuwait sends me pictures of thermometers during the summer when it gets to 130*.

But that's Kuwait. I'm sure Iraq is SO much cooler.

I'm sure they think they have a good reason, they see the whole war as an invasion for imperial reasons and that we just want their oil, or their country.

Not everyone believed that we just made a completly alturistic move in going over there, think about the name "insurgents" - they are rebelling

Insurgents are terrorists.

so all insurgents are terrorists? blanket statement. not really relevant to any sort of argument though
