What to do with an old computer?
2006-04-21, 11:03 PM #1
I've got an old computer and I have no idea what to do with it. I dont know what the exact specs are, I'll be able to find out in an hour or so, once I get windows on it. But its from around 1999, and has a 20 gig hard drive.

So any suggestions?

[edit] Added pic, and also its running on Windows 98.

Also: What kind of ports are these (The ones highlighted in red and yellow)

The red is a standard PCI port and the yellow looks like an ISA. Hard to tell due to your highlightation.

Yeah, just get one of those really tiny Linuxes and put it all up ons.

Yeah, that's an ISA slot. At first it looked like a motherboard extender slot thingamabob that I've seen on some older Dells.

I currently have one old PC in use as a m0n0wall router, which works great.

I run a webserver off another one.

You could also use it as a NAS, running something like FreeNAS:

There are lots of other things, it all depends on what you currently have/what you need.

I usually give my old PCs to someone who needs them. Last one went to my mother, the one before that to a friend.

Fallout, Syndicate, Dark Forces, etc.

It must be done.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

It has an SiS chipset, burn it at the stake.

No, but really, if it has PCI slots, you can at least get a halfway-decent radeon card to play Unreal Tournament or some such.

Got the specs.

500 mhz
128 megs of ram
20 gig hard drive

Direct X 6.1

It also has a cd writer, and a floppy drive

:p

I'm a little interested in trying to turn it into a webserver. Would this work for it?

It'd work just fine. My webserver is a 233 MHz AMD K6 and it's running great.

Attach it to a D-Link thing where you can switch between them with the same keyboard/mouse/monitor and play older games on it.

Definitely go for the webserver. Just make sure you don't use Windows 98.
2006-04-23, 5:53 AM #23
Wow, that thing sure it old. I haven't seen a Motherboard with a ISA slot in like 8 years. I kinda wish they still had ISA so I could use my old scanner. DAMN THOSE SCSI CARDS!

I've got an older computer here that I've no idea what to do with.

Pentium 166mhz
16mb EDO RAM
Some ancient graphics card which only supports 256 colours.
1.2gb hard drive
PS/1 keyboard
Serial mouse

I'll probably just throw it away :P

disect your super old one. disecting components like hard drives is fun. just remember, dont stick the magnets from the hard drive on opposite sides of your hands.

Keep it and use it for games that won't work with XP, such as Master of Orion and other DOS games that would otherwise be hindered by the speed of a computer (Such as Wing Commander :D)
