Sounds like a good idea to me. Better then the 'Generations'-style ideas I'd heard before.

So, lemme guess, we'll see the enterprise crashing on a mysterious island, and then we'll get a bunch of flashbacks showing how the crew met. Oh, and there will be a hatch, but it just turns out to be a Klingon bird-of-prey that got buried there.

Heh heh. I think kyle90 got the essential facts summed up quite nicely there.

Seriously though, it will be interesting to see how they modernize the settings. The ancient Enterprise in the newest series looked like something that could be put together from random parts now being manufactured. The NG and later had more integrated looks. But the old Kirk series does look strange nowadays. Of course it was already present in a way in the special episodes of the latest series, and maybe they will stick to that style, more or less.

I hope they simply try to "precede" the Enterprise from the TOS movies, like Star Trek VI. That was a good Enterprise. The TV series one was bleeeeeeeeeeeeech.
