Addressing parents.
2006-04-30, 11:14 PM #1
Just a quick question.

I adress my dad by his first name and never "dad," "daddy" or whatever. Somehow it has always been that way. For awhile I thought this was an uncommon thing among family relationships but I am beginning to see this is not exactly so. But I never call my mother by her name.

Do you address a parent by names or just terms like "dad" or "mom"? Like if your dad was in the other room and you needed his attention. Just curious.

normally when i think of someone calling a parent by a first name, it's because they are a step-parent.

nah my folks I call them daddy and mommy lol. just always have. I mean I know there names, and well I see them as indiviuals u know, they dont know it all, etc and know their backstories. but i dunno also see them as my parents meh

I think they'd be offended if I called them by their first names lol. I mean my mom gets mad when people dont call me by my first and middle name, saying my first name isnt my full name...rambling lol...going now... :em321: :p

I would say its about 45/45 on what I call my dad, either "Dad" or "Herb", his name. The other 10% is usually slang or a playful insult, like **** sucker, punk-***, pimp, prick, etc etc. Me and him have a super cool relationship. I call my mom "Mom" 90% of the time, but sometimes I call her "Judy", and other times I call her "Judeath" which is just some biblical-sounding spin on her real name (Judy) that I made up.

In my family it's pretty common to address parents with their first name. I do too, although I usually only call my mother by her first name. I call them whatever I feel like though. Sometimes I do say mom or dad ofcourse.

Mom and Dad, almost never anything else.

Another interesting question: Which is it? "Mom and Dad" or "Dad and Mom"?

Well, since I'm adopted... I don't know what to call my parents. Funny how I've had 17 years to figure this out, but still haven't. I just say something, and leave off the addressing part.

I call my grandparents by the usual grandma/pa.

As for my mom, I call her by her name since she's undeserving of the title.

Couldn't you call them the way they would like to be addressed? After all, it costs nothing, but might make them happier. From what you said, it sounds like that would also be easier for you.

Mam and Pap for my mother and father respectively.
Oma for my grandmothers. I don't have any grandfathers anymore but if I did I'd address them with Opa.

Anyone else (brother, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc) I do address with their name.

The parents are Mom and Dad, and I only have one set of grandparents left so they are Grandma and Grandpa. About the only time I call my parents by their frist name is if they are in a group of people who all have kids themselves and it just doesn't make sense to call the whole group to get one person.

My mom & dad call each other Mon & Dad most of the time, atleast when I'm around, so it feels weird to call them by there names. Occasionaly I'll use their names to get their attention. but yeah.

Pretty much same for me. "Go talk to your mom" my dad usually says. But my mother calls him by the first name too.
