I don't pay tax.

Well, I do. I pay VAT on everything. But I don't pay NI, for I am but a poor, unemployed student. Nor do I pay road tax or any of the like.

I got $2800 from federal and provincial.

I got $2700 back from Federal but had to pay $35 to the state. That'll be my last return for probably the rest of my life. The rest of the time I'll be paying in. I'm going to set up a savings account that'll draw in enough interest to handle how much I'll owe to taxes from year to year...

I got ~$612 CAD (~$550 USD).

So far I bought a Dell 1907FP (just arrived today) and some DVDs. I'm probably also going to get another GB of ram, and a new keyboard/mouse.

I'm buying a new sound card, because everyone on massassi seems to think it will solve all my sound trouble.
(My palm pilot has better sound quality than my pc...)

I've never had anything but onboard sound on my computer, I wonder what the outside world of sound cards is like.

I got $360 back. It was going to go towards a 6800GT for my comp, but now it may go towards a paintball gun. At the moment though, I'm waiting until I have a job to make sure I can pay rent and bills before buying anything for myself.

Racing stripes for my car.

True story. I want it to look something like this, although I was thinking maybe black stripes to be a little more inconspicuous:

Do people often think refunds are some sort of free money?

If you account for all of your bills based on what you actually make after taxes through the year then yea, you can have the refund set aside for something else. It just depends how much you make or what you want to do.

Like Dagger said, if you've paid more into the system than you owe, and you have paid all your bills and so on, getting a refund is getting money that you didn't have before.

Now, if you're talking about people thinking they are entitled to getting money back, that's a whole other matter.
