Original Star Wars coming to DVD

Dont worry. I'm sure there'll be a saga box set released on HD-DVD or blu-ray. If we're lucky that version will include both.

Um.... no there are not. The only dvds I own that are 2.0 only are television show box sets. Even the most meager dvd release has Dolby Digital 5.1, and the bigger ones have 5.1 EX or DTS 6.1.

Bill, there are a lot of changes in the DVD version of ESB and RotJ that are undesirable. In ESB, Vader's entire conversation with the Emperor was mutilated, not to mention the way the Palpatine now looks: it was pathetic in RotS and looks no better here. Granted, old Green-face looked pretty bad too, but since the new version looks no better, it's just changing things for the sake of changing them. RotJ Palpatine is the only good Palpatine, as far as I'm concerned.

In RotJ, I've never been a fan of the SE ending sequence, but I suppose that's a matter of preference. The Rebel Alliance is still a ragtag band of freedom fighters, and a low-key celebration with the Ewoks feels much more fitting than mass celebrations throughout the galaxy. Then, to my mind, is the more grievous change of placing Hayden Christiansen in there as the ghost of Anakin. Not only does it recall the fact that he was just a whiney, poorly-acted loser in the PT, which hardly merits being "redeemed," but moreover it implies that Anakin Skywalker ceased to exist the moment he turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader. It was, in my opinion, a much more poignant moment to see that Anakin had been maturing and suffering inside of Darth Vader the whole time. It makes the whole redemption arc--incidentally the focus of all 6 movies--a little more meaningful.

But, no: I'm a whiney Star Wars fanboy who just likes to ***** about George Lucas raping my childhood. "I am wrong." Ok. Glad you think so.

Ok. First of all, let me point out how stupid the first segment of this argument sounds.

"I am pissed off because they put in new footage that caused Palpatine to be the same actor as he is in the rest of the series."

Yeah, sounds pretty stupid doesn't it?

Ok. Second point. It's not as bad, but it's still not that bright.

"There is NO WAY ANYONE would celebrate other than the people involved in the actual liberation of the entire galaxy, even though the entire galaxy has been liberated."

Hmmm.... Yeah it doesn't seem like a great thing to whine about.

Third point. Yeah, sure. Remember that whole thing about self sacrifice and such leading to the force ghost... Well remember how Anakin (jedi) sacrifices himself to save his wife. He doesn't sacrifice his life in a literal sense, but god forbid we actually have to think about something and consider a concept that isn't slapped in your face! Then, and try to stay with me here, remember how Vader (not a jedi) sacrifices his life (in a literal way this time) to save his son.

Gee... I don't know. I wonder why Anakin would come back instead of Vader. People just like to assume that when Vader kills the Emporer that he becomes Anakin again. But hey think of it this way... why on earth would it be more meaningful that he finally overcomes what he became from trying to save his wife and child by saving his son. THE ONLY REASON HE BECAME VADER IS BECAUSE HE WANTED TO SAVE HIS WIFE AND CHILD! There's not a whole hell of a lot wrong with him being young again. It makes sense, and I think it's quite a lot MORE meaningful than the old way.

And lastly, yeah you are a whiny star wars fanboy *****ing about how George Lucas raped your childhood. And you are wrong.

Yeah, I'd like to agree with the whole "raping your childhood" thing. Unless you were born in like 1969 or something and saw the movies in the theatre the first time they came out, you have no room to talk.

Woah, wait... "win...dows...?" Is that some funny was to pronounce DOS?

I was going to prepare a crushing defeat of your arguments, by the way, but it's not worth arguing about. My points boiled down to two things: 1) some of the changes altered the feel of the originals, which I didn't like--not to say that the new way is necessarily bad; 2) some of the changes have major effects on one's interpretation of the story. You aren't as attached to the original feel as I am, and you (God knows why) like the new interpretations. No point in arguing.

Except, you know, as a way to release tension due to my childhood trauma.

I believe he's saying that GL has been changing the movies since theatrical release in 1977, which is true.

The only changes I don't like, at least that I can think of now, are:

1. The Jabba scene in ANH. What's the point? I liked the suspense of not seeing him until RotJ.

2. Greedo shooting first. Them shooting at the same time is okay, I guess.

3. Anakin being in the end of RotJ...yeah, it makes sense, but Hayden also sucks. He didn't NEED to be there. I also kind of liked seeing old Anakin there.

I have no problem with the other planet celebration scenes. I don't see why that's a big deal. Oh, and I think the change to McDiarmid for Palpatine in ESB was a good one. Wasn't the other actor actually a woman?

Am I the only one who feels slightly ripped off by Lucas for saying, "No, I won't release the original trilogy. Nevar!" and now changing to, "Well, now that you've all bought the DVDs you may buy the original trilogy, isn't that generous? Sorry, that I didn't tell you before. GIMME YOUR MONEY!"

as i already said, they probably found a collector who had the films. remember, they used the original masters to make the Special Editions.
