So, I've been thinking to myself, where do a lot fo these fads come from, but moreso, what the heck do some of them mean?

1) oRI LY = weird snowy owl? Very funny, but what does it mean, who started it?

2) Brian Peppers *do a barrel roll* - what's that alluding to?

3) there are many others I can't think of right now. Post yours here, and explain what they all mean! :p

from what I understand the O RILY is from another board (forget which) and it means "Oh really?" there was a whole site on it and diff. pix its been put on besides the owl, like funny faces bush is making etc or just diff. actors/characters

The barrel thing im not to sure, but the first is just a play on words, internet speak, a fad born in a forum lol

The best "O RLY" manipulation was the "ORi LY" thing with the owl's head on a prior.

I know O RLY was an obession at the IGN forums, but I don't know which forum it is truely credited too.

I always laugh at a good O RLY picture though, thought it never got old!

Most fads come from outta nowhere. They just inexplicably catch on. Oh, and those sites listed as starts of fads? No way, that's just where the fads end up. You can tell if it's a popular fad by the amount of appearences it makes at those sites, but that's not the same thing as the site starting the fad.

Oh, and the orly owl sucks.

well, think about it. ytmnd basically exists to create and perpetuate internet fads.. sometimes just steal them and make them popular.

I've heard O RLY was started on the Something Awful forums with this thing whee you remove all the unnecessary letters from a word.
And "Barrel Roll" is from Starfox 64, Pepper shouts "Do a Barrel Roll!" and it caught on withth e Brian Peppers thing.

Goddess knows what starts internet fads, probably someone who uploads something, someone with a massive MSN, AIM, YIM & ICQ list who finds it teh awesome, and forwards the link to just about everyone on those lists, and from there on you get a snowball effect.

But do elaborate on Internet fads, you could concider stuff like 1337 and the infamous "Thanks for the information" picture fads.
Or other things like the "All your base" flash animation which was all the hype across the net for a while back in 2001.
