All the time I get random messages from people I don't know. Stuff like:

I've gotten a couple of those myself.

Ignore them.

Still not as bad as EFNet. They K-Line you if your ISP is on any sort of blacklist for spamming. (Which means ANYONE could have spammed, whether it be from a virus or otherwise) It's a stupid auto-detect script, and it's the most retarded thing I've ever seen. Way to eliminate like 95% of users!

It's the traditional muslim greeting in Arabic, it's just a shortening of Salaam alaikum (probably a very bad anglicisation but that's what it sounds like) which means "peace be upon you"

Heh, you forgot the alif at the beginning. "As-Salaamu Alaykum" tends to be the grecko-romantic translation (sans the hyphen, didn't want the filters to replace the beginning with ***, the capitalized S is to show emphasis on two seperate "s" sounds).

I know there is meant to be a bit at the beginning but it tends to be cut off in speech or said so fast it's barely heard. I've only heard it from people who speak Urdu or Bengali as a first language and there's a chance that the phrase is a little different in those dialects.

Not sure, it's pretty apparent from my Libyan and Egyptian arabic instructors, assuming they say the full thing and not just "Salaam."
