The Riddle Thread: Part 2
2006-05-09, 4:00 PM #1
I see the old thread got necromiced, but I looked through it and nobody solved my riddle from the fourth page. So you all know how this works; the person who gets it, posts the next riddle, and so on.

Quote:
I was wed a century ago,
to my partner who was here before.
She flies, she slips away, she flows.
But me, through her, I merely grow.

Nope.

Here's a hint: this was originally posted in 2005, and the phrase "a century ago" was exact.

Ooh I was going to post this because so many people came up with awesome original riddles. I was really impressed with some of the ones you, Grismath, Gnostica, and others thought up. Most even rhymed. I hope to continue this fine trend.

Anyway...

The greatest forest trembles
And the mighty earth quakes
When my legion assembles.

My gold-armored stakes
Trace arcs and curves nimble
And fear not occasional mistakes.

My leaden heart longs to express
Blackest thoughts of ancient strife
With words I write under stiff duress.

I am sharpened by the knife
But snap still under stress:
Do not bite away my life.

What am I?

In the mountains of Rockhome there lived two clans, Lubendorf and Skardenaal. These rugged mountain people were chiefly members of one of two classes, being either Builders or Scatterers. While most denziens of Rockhome were generally amiable towards the few outsiders who ventured to their heights, Builders of Clan Skardenaal were notorious for their cheating ways and always lied to strangers. Similarly, Scatterers of Clan Lubendorf were, as a bunch, very mischevious and also had a penchant for mistruth.

You meet two sturdy mountain-dwellers of Rockholme arguing amongst the cliffs, but they stop at your approach. One is named Longbank and the other, Freehold. When you ask them about themselves, they respond thus:

Longbank: Freehold is a Lubendorf.
Freehold: Longbank is a Skardenaal.
Longbank: Freehold is a Scatterer.
Freehold: Longbank is a Builder.

What can you conclude about their classes?

Imagine a black street. No lantern is shining. In the houses along the street all the lights are shut off. Neither stars, nor the moon can be seen in the sky.
A person aproaches the road. It's a black man, wearing a dark blue sweatshirt and black trousers. Even his shoes are black.
Without looking he starts to cross the street, as a car comes screeching around the corner. The car's lights are off. It aproaches the black man, in his dark blue sweatshirt, black trousers and black shoes, at a very high speed ........ hits the breaks and comes to a halt in front of him.
How is that possible?

The black man turned into the Hulk and stopped the car with his fist.

(I know the answer; but I'll let someone else guess it)

Alright, riddlemasters, time for your next challenge! :p

I have many faces but none have a name,
And though lacking kingdoms, I wage war,
Where only by sheer numbers do I win fame,
And the defeated lie strewn about the floor.

Many a mighty empire have I built,
And many fortunes have I seen crumble,
Often times my generals swell with guilt,
When they see my battlements crumble.

What am I?
