I'm currently a life guard at the YMCA making 7.00$ an hour. I have an A+ cert, so I wanted to find a tech job this summer. I didn't really want to work at Geek Squad because they have a reputation of being morons, even if that is a generalization. There is however a fairly large local firm that I applied at.

Yeah, yeah their web site has too much flash. Anyway, the owner didn't really seem sure about hiring a 16 year old just for the summer. He said he'd start me out working 10 to 3, and he'd pay me 7.00 an hour. I know I could easily get more than that just working as a salesman at Worst Buy or CompUSSR, but this place would get me more experience and possibly train me a bit on large business networks. I only got interested in PCs at all 4 years ago when JK blue screened on start, so I don't have a terribly great experience working on older PCs. I know my stuff, but have no way to prove it. I think once I work there for a month, he'll give me a raise. Should I take him up, or apply at n00b Squad?

1) The Geek Squad prides themselves on being extensively knowledgable. Yecti works there, and I don't know why you would think that they're "n00bs". Most of them probably know a ****load more about gadgets/computers than you. I doubt you could get a job there with just an A+ certification, especially since you're underaged.

2) Best Buy isn't a bad place to work at, just straight up. It'll be hard getting a job there not being 18, but if you do get a job it seems like a pretty nice atmosphere. Not only that, but I don't know why you rail on them like you know what you're talking about. Aside from video cards, their prices on items aren't too bad.

3) Quit acting like a know-it-all.

Yoshi, yoshi, must you be a fanboy about everything? As I say that's just what I hear. I also said that I was generalizing. I have heard horror stories.

Also, the prices are pretty bad compared to new egg. But that's inherent in being a B&M store. They aren't selling to enthusiasts.

EDIT: Blast, I forgot about that age thing. Dagnabbit! They do require 18 yrs.

My sister was babysitting these two kids once, at our house, and they were acting up so I brought out my high voltage generator, turned it on, and threatened to zap them with it.

Of course I may have embelleshed some; I told them that at high power it could shoot lightning bolts six feet long and cause your internal fluids to boil and make you explode. When in reality it was mostly just a flyback transformer I pulled out of an old computer monitor that made little sparks at 30,000 volts.

Well, fixing PC is something I like, and pay wise they are exactly the same except I have a chance of getting a raise at the PC place. I hate not being 18. Everyone thinks I'm a n00b. I should start using linux or something.

I've shopped at best buy, and it's true what that site says-- they care more about pushing their damn warranties on you than anything else. I'm sure there are exceptions, but at my local store, half of the people who work there are f***ing crooked and the other half are just inept.

You live in California, probably the worst example of Best Buys anywhere.

You and Obi both are being too general. I have had several encounters where they couldn't tell you 2 + 2 = 4.

I have no doubt that there are many out there that know what they're doing quite well. But I also know that some of them are idiots.

My friend's brother worked at Best Buy and had an ingenius method for stealing things. He never got caught.

Part of the thread obviously was too see if Best buy was as bad as they say. I figure with what I hear, I'd rather not take the chance, but the point is moot cause I'm just 16.

Every Best Buy associate that I have ever talked to or overheard was a mindless twit. Maybe it is just the Best Buys in NJ, but I have a feeling that they are mostly the same.

Obi, the cold, hard reality is that you'll be lucky to find a job that you like, at all. If it's a summer job, you jsut have to grit it out for the pay check, simple as that.

At 16? You'll be lucky if anyone takes you. At least here in the UK, anyway. Well, excepting monkeyjobs like till-managing and trolley-pushing.

And life guarding. Meh. I'm happy. This will look really nice on my resume. I forgot that i was only 16. I should forge a birth certificate.

I got offered a job at a local non-profit farm(read: poor). They pay $5 a day, and if you work all summer long, and dont miss a day, they double it to $10 a day! This works out to $1 or $2 an hour, for basicly gruntwork in a bloody farm. I doubt anyone is actually going to work there.

Heh, I tried applying for Best Buy like 5 times (including one interview during one of their job fairs) and I was turned down all 5 times. I also happen to be 24 years so I don't think age is much of a factor to work there. They probably just want someone with a nice resume, previous job/volunteer experience, and someone who can pass the psychological test part of their application with good results.

I have yet to see a Best Buy around here that doesn't have "Now Hiring" posters in the windows.

Best Buy is like any other company, they have their good sides and they have their bad sides. But seeing the store as an employee, it certainly not as bad as they could be. They certainly have their own evils (don't ever get a magazine when you go to the register), but that doesn't sway my opinion that overall they are a good place to work.

And while I'm sure some Geek Squad employees are idiots, there's idiots in any company, and it doesn't represent the knowledge of the entire department as a whole, especially among all the stores.

I currently work at Best Buy, and I don't have any problems with it. There are good days and there are bad days, like any other place to work. I've worked there roughly 2 years now.

I've been to that Best Buy Sux page before. We actually used to pull it up in the manager's bridge and laugh at how stupid some of the rants from employees were. There's a few in there that are literally "omg, i called out for like a week straight and they fired me wtf?!" The customer section is equally crazy in some respects. Just be wary of what you read on any "this entity sucks" website. You're only going to be presented with an extreme version of one side of the story.

You'd be surprised how many facts get left out of a story when a customer/employee doesn't get their way on something. (I'm in HR. I know.)
