Why is the playstation 3 supposed to have such good graphics, and cost so much less than my PC?
2006-05-17, 3:30 PM #3
There is speculation that Sony actually used PC's to show off their games at E3......hmmm

Because Sony sell's each console with a loss. The cost of production is much higher.

The CEO (I think) of Sony, said he thought the PS3 was too cheap. Possible raise in price before release? I doubt it, but it's still interesting.
Think while it's still legal.

I buy the Tiger Woods game each year anyways, that just makes me want it more :D

I'd like to see a tree. The graphics in the PGA Tour series are always pretty good except for the trees which usually look like cardboard cutouts.

Looks nice but I think a golf game would be much more fun on the Wii.

I'd like to see these kinds of graphics with more than one character on the screen, with an actual environment (as opposed to a monotone background), and have the characters do more than stand around and smile. What is this, Tiger Woods: Catatonia?

I also notice that although a screenshot of this exhibits very realistic clothing, the video in motion makes it clear that the clothing doesn't actually behave like clothing in real-time. It is not in any way dynamic like real clothing. Although it may appear ruffled, it is actually pre-ruffled, and could never re-ruffle in novel, dynamic ways.

what are you talking about? do i need to even ask how this is supposed to work or are you just wrong?
America, home of the free gift with purchase.

Yes, they are going to sell the console at a loss.

A company as huge as Sony can afford to. (I forget where they really make their money with this. I just know it isn't at a per-unit basis.)

Normally, even before the price of a console comes down, other generations and advancements are made in the line to reduce production costs.

They make their money on the games and peripherals, I believe. One consumer will only buy one console, but will then buy several games and add-ons for it.

That's what Microsoft did with the 360, too.
That is also why they are so pissed of if someone hacks the console and puts another OS on it, to use it (together with other consoles) as a cheap supercomputer. They make their money through games and licenses.
Sorry for the lousy German

They make it back with the games.

That's how almost every console is sold. The only exceptions that I know of are Nintendo's consoles are sold for profit. The money is made with peripheral and game purchases.

Instead of jumping to conclusions next time look it up.

From what I understand, those are all prerecorded animations made to match specific lines of dialog, correct? If so, I am far less impressed than if it were automatic. HL2 gets it fairly spot on, we just need more facial bones as well as software that recognizes changes in tone, attitude and volume of voice.

he said they were realtime using the ps3 engine right?

The video was realtime, it doesn't mean the animations were created in realtime.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Tiger Woods currently out on 360 is pretty much a direct port of 2006 released on the PS2 and XBox some time last year. Wait for 2k7 on PS3 and 360, that's when the fun begins :)
