Are you tall, skinny, and have long fingers?
2006-05-18, 6:06 PM #1
If you are tall, skinny, have long fingers, your spine curves a bit, one side of your chest sticks out or is indented, have had weird sensations or pain/stress near or around your heart, you just might have Marfan. Even if you're just tall, skinny and have long fingers.

This is no joke. I myself exhibit each and every physical symptom. Thanks to having CNN on the tube in the background, and Paula Zahn's show being on, I now know this exists.

Needless to say, I will be seeing a doctor VERY soon.
(as soon as I can afford it. :( )

Visit www.marfan.org for more info. And see a doctor.

Vague description, generic symptoms. Doesn't really sound like a real "disease" to me.

I've had all of those and I see a doctor regularly. Obviously since he's told me nothing he's a quack and I should call up GenericExpensiveMedicineCorp, manufacturer of ExpensiveMarfanRemedy, to find me a doctor that will perscribe me ExpensiveMarfanRemedy!

Seriously though. Don't diagnose yourself, let your doctor do his/her job.

If you can't afford a doctor*, then you should consider reworking your budget, or making one altogether. Prioritize your spending. My parents have a bit of money always set aside in the event of an emergency if they need it.

* - Not that I have any clue at all how much a visit costs.

Or at least a disease that's vague enough to perscribe all tall, skinny, long fingered people expensive medication for a disease they probably don't have.

I'm tall, skinny, and have small hands. (Woman sized, no joke.)

I used to constantly experience chest pains, for no reason.

We never did figure that one out.

But this sounds like a bunch of BS.

Kind of like telling a 4 year old they have a hyperactivity disorder and need to be medicated.

BS.

About Marfan Syndrome: What is Marfan Syndrome?

What's Marfan syndrome? The Marfan syndrome is a heritable condition that affects the connective tissue. The primary purpose of connective tissue is to hold the body together and provide a framework for growth and development. In the Marfan syndrome, the connective tissue is defective and does not act as it should. Because connective tissue is found throughout the body, the Marfan syndrome can affect many body systems, including the skeleton, eyes, heart and blood vessels, nervous system, skin and lungs.

The Marfan syndrome affects men, women and children, and has been found among people of all races and ethnic backgrounds. It is estimated that at least 1 in 5,000 people in the United States have the disorder. For more detailed information, read an excerpt from the NMF booklet The Marfan Syndrome

seems like a standard to me. quit freaking out.

They get more specific on their website. The more specific descriptions don't apply to me (certainly not as much as the vague and broad ones do).

Nope, sorry, this is a real and not cool disease. I am tall, skinny, and have long fingers, and I've had a couple doctors do a few tests to check....I don't have it, apparently, which is very good!

God, some of you take things out of context. I haven't seen a single person say "OMGZ, I HAV0RZ THIS!!1!111", but merely wondering if they do.

Marfan is serious stuff. Just because pharmaceutical companies have a stranglehold on just about everything medical, doesn't mean a disease is fake.

Should like a load of BS personally.

Oh, and the fact that claim it's hereditary I'm sure is design just to freak people out who have a generally talk and skinny family.

That or it's there to make short fatties feel better.

No, a hypochondriac would have said "Holy crap, I know I have Marfan, I'm going to tell my Dr right now!" :p

(Not directed towards Emon, but for everyone)
Let's say you exhibit the symptoms of AIDS, but never heard of it before. You suddenly got wind of it, so naturally you're going to wonder whether or not you have it, and would want to get tested. Being arrogant in the face of possibly having something life threatening doesn't make you cool. I don't think anyone in this thread wants to believe Marfan is affecting their body, I sure don't. If anything, I'd be denying to myself that I have it, if I did. I merely designed my original post to try and grab some attention to the subject at hand.

And I have to correct myself, Marfan is not a disease, rather, it is a syndrome. (A group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease, psychological disorder, or other abnormal condition.)

And wtf is with some of you people thinking Marfan is some sort of ****ing conspiracy or made up to get money out of people? There's many effects on the body that Marfan can have without someone knowing it. I'm surprised I haven't heard a comment like "It's probably caused by all the hormones they put in milk to make us grow taller."

I have a friend with it, and his sister has it much worse then he does. Marfan's isn't just a little skinny and tall, we're talking about very very skinny guys often over 6½ feet, with amazingly slender long fingers and limbs and being strangely flexy/double-jointed. He doesn't have particularly big parents but last time I saw him a few years ago he was over 6'6. His sister must have been around my own height at 6'4.
