some companies are cool about pirating their software... such as Maya. While alias looses alot of money off pirated copies of maya, chances are, the people who downloaded maya will learn on maya and prefer that to their competitors software. and eventually, if you want to get a job in the field with the program, you'll have to work from a legit copy and buy your own copy if you ever plan on putting together a studio or something.
While they don't encourage downloading their software, they feel better about people downloadnig THEIR software over their competitors.
pretty sure in Canada, downloading music and tv shows is not illegal, it's illegal to HOST the files, but to download them is not, the reason is because you don't know if your getting the direct rip of the CD, or if your getting a copy of a copy of a copy of the orginal rip.
same goes for physical movies and stuff I think, it would be wrong for a friend to burn a copy of his CD for another friend, but it would be fine to burn a copy of the burned copy of the orginal because your not coping the orginal CD, but a copy of the orginal CD.
