So, I decided to give up piracy. I was just curious as to how many pirates we have here. I want to know people's opinions. If you pirate, how do you justify it? If you don't, why not?

(for the Brits, just estimate, It's rough anyways.)

I downloaded about 280 songs before I reformatted, and have them all on CD still. I just gave them up because (stupid reason) I've bought some of the CDs and find it easier to organize that way, and I always have the whole album instead of a song here and a song there.

I used to pirate just songs and only 80's hits, but I don't think it can be justified, regardless of the amount pirated (I pitifully only had at most 150 songs). I don't pirate anymore because of Pandora. I don't watch many movies or play many games so there isn't much for me to pirate anymore. OpenOffice gives me free word processing. Free IDE's are widely available for programming, mostly in learning edition form (ex. MSVC#.NET Express 2.0) which is sufficient for any non-professional purpose.

well, I know it's a taboo subject here, but i've got many games that are pirated, be it from downloading or burned from a friend, i also have 2 seasons of SG1 and the 2 season of atlantis somewhere.

Donno how much that's worth in dollar ammounts, probably over 1000 dollars if you add up EVERYTHING over the years.

Well, if it is only on cable or dish, I think it is. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You know, I've always wondered how so many people could afford photo-shop.

some companies are cool about pirating their software... such as Maya. While alias looses alot of money off pirated copies of maya, chances are, the people who downloaded maya will learn on maya and prefer that to their competitors software. and eventually, if you want to get a job in the field with the program, you'll have to work from a legit copy and buy your own copy if you ever plan on putting together a studio or something.

While they don't encourage downloading their software, they feel better about people downloadnig THEIR software over their competitors.

pretty sure in Canada, downloading music and tv shows is not illegal, it's illegal to HOST the files, but to download them is not, the reason is because you don't know if your getting the direct rip of the CD, or if your getting a copy of a copy of a copy of the orginal rip.

same goes for physical movies and stuff I think, it would be wrong for a friend to burn a copy of his CD for another friend, but it would be fine to burn a copy of the burned copy of the orginal because your not coping the orginal CD, but a copy of the orginal CD.

This thread is going to be deleted as soon as an admin notices it, but oh well.

I've got several hundred gigs worth of movies, TV shows, music, porn, etc. All pirated. Most of my software is pirated, as well as the large majority of my games.

Why do I do it? Good question. Probably because I'm a poor university student.

Over a grand for me, easily. A few expensive programs, and ALOT of music. Not to mention 2 OSes. ;)

So, I'm guessing you thought "$" was "hours". Common mistake.

I use programs that cost multiple thousands of dollars. Not that I would pirate anything of course >.>

No... How much money I spent on my pc when I bought it. Not how many hours I've spent on it.

I'm not trying to justify it per say, but many of the people, especially students, who pirate things like Maya, 3dsmax, Photoshop, etc, would never have saved up hundreds to buy them anyway.
