Alliance: The Silent War

Check out this incredible first-person shooter developed by an independent company. It is called Alliance: The Silent War and spans 90 years of history, from World War I to the present. It has amazing graphics (unbelievable lighting!!) and makes use of an engine developed by the people making the game. It also boasts over 200 real-life weapons and realistic ballistics (including gravity affecting a bullet's trajectory). I heard about this game from the front page of IGN.com where it is suggested that this may be the Gran Turismo of FPS. It's coming out sometime in 2007, but apparently the developers don't have a publisher yet for this game.

There is in-game footage of the game here.

Essentially the company was started by a few Harvard students who developed some powerful algorithms for simulating environments with real-time lighting, and they made use of them for the game. They have licensed the technology to various organizations including the military, so I have few doubts that this game's visuals are as bad-*** as they appear.

Also, I've never been excited about an FPS until now!! This game is looking like it will be absolutely incredible.

No, I don't know these people or go to school at Harvard, and I am not an actual professor. Let's discuss the game now. :D

It looks really good, hopefully it's as interesting as it seems.

The multiplayer mode in this game will be highly customizable and along with the standard modes (death match, capture the flag, etc.) they are going to have a "What If" mode where you can do something like pit a handful of Navy SEALS against WWI soldiers, and so on.

They don't mention bayonettes and swords! What about the bayonettes?!?! *cries* :gbk:

It's not WWI if you can't jump out of the trenches, pull out your saber and cry "CHEAAAAARGE" as you get mowed to bits by machinegun fire.

It works for me. I am using Windows Media Player 10 and the ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder, if that helps.

A. You're using the two worst programs for playing videos.
B. You need the codec, or a suitable program with them.
C. VLC if you don't want to tinker or deal with the console, mplayer if you want it to play ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING (But its harder to use).

If you consider typing "mplayer whatever.mov" in a console hard to use. . . :p

Wow, choosing your weapon = awesome... based on the video, anyway... the combat looks a little too weak, though... :-/. Same with the AI, and the levels could be a bit more detailed... It seems technically amazing, it just needs some more art direction or style.
