Check out this incredible first-person shooter developed by an independent company. It is called Alliance: The Silent War and spans 90 years of history, from World War I to the present. It has amazing graphics (unbelievable lighting!!) and makes use of an engine developed by the people making the game. It also boasts over 200 real-life weapons and realistic ballistics (including gravity affecting a bullet's trajectory). I heard about this game from the front page of IGN.com where it is suggested that this may be the Gran Turismo of FPS. It's coming out sometime in 2007, but apparently the developers don't have a publisher yet for this game.
There is in-game footage of the game here.
Essentially the company was started by a few Harvard students who developed some powerful algorithms for simulating environments with real-time lighting, and they made use of them for the game. They have licensed the technology to various organizations including the military, so I have few doubts that this game's visuals are as bad-*** as they appear.
Also, I've never been excited about an FPS until now!! This game is looking like it will be absolutely incredible.
