Office 2007 beta

You can download this for free, can't remember the link. It's a bit buggy but i'm really liking the changes to the UI (I didn't think I would at first), i've only really looked at Word, but the UI puts a heavy emphasis on letting users structure documents properly, the packaged styles are pretty swish too.

Is it possible to install it next to Office 2k3? I don't want to uninstall 2k3 because if this breaks, I need SOMETHING that works.
2006-05-26, 1:00 PM #3
Yeah it's possible.

I'm sure they've probably nicked a few features from elsewhere, but the implementation of everything is really nice. I particularly like the excellent support for equation and symbols as well as more intuitive referencing features.

I want VS .NET 2005 or 2007. If the latter exists.

Or maybe you're scared it'll detect your pirated ISO of Office 2k?

Aye, it's Open Office for me. Although I'm sure it's got security holes, it's not integrated into Windows like MS Office is.

Meh, just turn your clock back before you use it.

I'm still using the Microsoft Acrylic beta; it expired months ago I think.

Also, openoffice sucks.

In my opinion, the vastly redesigned UI in office 2007 is the best UI change that anyone has come up with for a common-use application in recent years. They've really nailed what the essential things are when creating a document (in Word). Whilst the interface is still buggy in the beta (format a document using the "modern" style and then highlight a clump of text) i'm confident these issues will be addressed. Also, the user interface manages to be slick and efficient even with all the visual effects that it has (can you turn them off? I like them but they might annoy a few people).

I haven't explored Excel and Powerpoint much (I never really use them anyway), but they seem to have simplified things in much the same way as Word.

You really want to at least try this whilst it's a free beta.

Indeed. It's free and serves all my word processing needs, which isn't much to begin with. MS Office has so many features that I could probably never find a reasonable scenario to use them all in.

I'm sure we'll be using it at work once it's released, but I just can't see paying for something like an office program when there are free alternatives that get the job done rather efficiently already. The UI is attractive, but it money doesn't grow on trees at my place. It looks like Microsoft is going in the right direction as of late, for the most part.

The whole windows ID thing was annoying and "Cancel" (to "skip entering information") just got me a "page not found". Grr. I ended up having to use some dummy account. Downloading now, hopefully there won't be more annoying interaction with microsoft involved ..

I've got a copy en route for the Iz meister. Looks shibby. (We still have office 97 at work, but IT are in the process of upgrading us to 2003)

Something about the word "Beta" when used in conjuction with a "Microsoft Product" scares me. :o

Why? I can create documents just fine, powerpoint slides are a breeze, it's free, and inherently more secure than MS Office.

Course notes should always be available in 3 formats. The original source format, pdf and postscript.

The reason for requiring the original source format is that there are problems with some pdf files that prevent them from printing properly, these are usually ones that are generated from slideshows with lots of imagery.

All of my notes are plain-text, with imagery only for the graphics notes.

How is it possibly overused? It's powerpoint or another presentation package. If you have to do a presentation with slides, you are going to need a presentation package. All of the programs have their problems but I tend to just use whichever is available on the machine i'm going to do the presentation on.

Well when you "skip entering information" you "cancel your download" as well.

I think. Anyways mine was already filled out from other betas so I just submited it.

Well, it seemed to install okay.

Anyone know why the installer insists that the products were neither installed nor repaired (after I tried repairing it after it said that it wasn't installed) correctly?

(Even though it works fine now and I can use it easily)

Okay so i worded it wrong. Its partially the users fault and partially Microsofts fault for making it so horrible. Users fault because they mostly dont understand what a presentation should look like, Microsofts fault because they included all of those stupid effects.

You could just as easily make a nicer presentation in flash, even if you only had the demo.
