Summer geekdom.
2006-05-29, 6:16 PM #1
Summer's here, the heat has arrived, I've got work to do during the day, and nothing but hardcore gaming at night. This summer, in addition to gaming my *** off, I'm going to try to start programming during the evenings/nights and get better associated with computers, and would like to know where to start for programming. I've got a bit of experience in Python (limited, but experience), and that's about it.

So what language should I go for, where should I start, where to look for help, and who could I turn to in the event that my hacking program to take over the Pentagon has a problem that I can't find in my debugging? So name some languages, pros and cons, and just a bit of information in general, or tips for programming.

And yes, I really, really am going outside this summer. :p

I had a blog. It sucked.

I'd say start with the standards: C and C++

EDIT: And yeah, go outside too. Just enough to get your daily requirement of vitamin D.

Then move onto higher-level languages, like QBasic and FORTRAN.

Alroight, where would I get started in C, like where could I find the necessary program(s)?

Personally, I'm a C++ fan but if you start with Java you can get your hands on great, free IDE's such as Eclipse.

Dev-C++ is the one I use. It's nice.

No way, HTML is obviously the best, it's the most widely use programming language evar!

Python is nice too, I've been forced into learning it (I wanted to learn C++ or Java, but I have to learn Python for work, so... I am)

C++ is definitely the language to start with in my opinion.

Go with C++. Java is taught in most high schools, thus being widely available in courses, and can be easily learned after C++. I wouldn't start with a scripting language like Python or Perl unless you are going to do a lot of OS or web scripting.

I began programming in high school with Visual Basic (teh sux lol) and then Java through the AP test. In my first year at RIT, I did a lot with C++ and C# (my favorite at the moment).

Is HTML really a programming language? It can't run programs by itself, it's pretty much static. It needs flash, css, javascript, php, cgi, etc. to make it dynamic. I just mean, it's a language for designing web pages, but that doesn't really qualify it as a programming language, certainly not in the same sense as something like C++ or Java.

I'm not going to delete my post, but I have a feeling I just completely missed a sarcastic remark by Cool Matty.... :gbk:

Yeah, never mind the computers - just start by learning Japanese.

You and Rerun fail Sarcasm 101. You will need to retake it next term in order to graduate.

I installed that Visual C# thing yesterday, perhaps I could try to get something out of it.

damn. none of you happen to know anything about arranging music, do you?
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

Not unless by "arranging music" you meant "changing ID3 tags".

I grab my laptop, put on swimwear, and kick it in the sun. Nothing like C# programming while increasing your risk of melanoma. But I'm tanning along quite nicely!
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Thats the plan this year for me...

I've got a job marking A-Level physics papers, its all done online now, so I'll be sitting in my back garden "borrowing" my dad's laptop, using the wireless I setup last year, marking in the sun and getting paid for it :D

lets just hope the british weather holds out.

WHY YES I DO!

Real music topics are pretty rare. I feel the need to latch onto them when they happen.

I arrange music quite often myself.
Why do you ask?

because my project for the summer is arranging music for my a capella group to sing this year and I've been having so much trouble with it! I guess that's expected for the first time I try it but still, I thought my head was going to explode.

I am coming back down. No children with me this time. There had better be liquor, or at least some good beer.

And buffalo wings.

Get your minds out of the gutter.
