There's been rumors, but this is the first solid confirmation.

Will we be able to play pre-DX 9 games on Vista? That's what I'm mainly worried about.

There will probally be issues with older stuff, just like there is for XP now.

...yeah. It's called backwards compatibility, and it's been in every version of DX. Why wouldn't we?

On one hand, it's Microsoft. If a feature could be neat or useful, it won't be included.

On the other hand, it's Microsoft. If a feature could bloat the operating system greatly, and cause massive conflicts for no reason, it will be included.

Damn catch 22's!

"DirectX 10 is exclusive to Windows Vista," he said. "However, Windows Vista will support DirectX 10 and DirectX 9."

This is an example of unclear journalism if I've ever seen it. Why even say that if Windows Vista will support DX 8, 7, 6, etc.. ?

Yeah, because it's not like Vista is getting a major overhaul simply to make the file system much improved, including a much better more useful UI, not to mention make the operating system more usable and customizable.

There was a point when that was funny. That was back in the days of Windows ME. That point has passed. Stop with the anti-MS fanboyism.

Ah, well everything I hear says DX7 and 8 will be supported, but I haven't heard much on it. I'm sure they will--it's not like it takes a lot of effort to have backwards support for that kind of thing.

It will "support" it, but that doesnt mean there won't be compatibility issues, as there always is with older software on newer hardware/OSes.

Well that's kind of a given for anyone who's tried playing System Shock 1/2, Dark Forces or JK on XP.

A. WinFS isn't gonna make it to Vista.
B. More useful and better UI has yet to be seen. From my experience so far, it looks damn similar to XP.
C. As stated before, the cheap version won't even have Aero theming.
D. Usable and Customizable are both things you can't claim until at LEAST a year after its public release.
E. It was a freakin joke, get off my back.
A. WinFS isn't gonna make it to Vista.
It wasn't when the release date was still set in 2006. Now it's sometime in 2007--either Q4 2006 or Q1 2007. So that's still up in the air as the release date for WinFS was 2007.
B. More useful and better UI has yet to be seen. From my experience so far, it looks damn similar to XP.
You obviously haven't looked at...anything. Here
C. As stated before, the cheap version won't even have Aero theming.
1) That doesn't affect me.
2) Spend 50 bucks more and get the version that does (if your computer can handle it). The majority of people will not get the cheapest version, as it's lacking a LOT.
D. Usable and Customizable are both things you can't claim until at LEAST a year after its public release.
It's been more than a year since its beta release, and I can easily say Usable and Customizable (albeit right now laggy).
E. It was a freakin joke, get off my back.
And it was a stupid one that you keep making. "LOL WINDOWS SUCKS". Get over that mentality...please.

You can play games on whatever version. DX10 comes with all versions (as of right now), you just don't get Aero, WinFS, or the console. All of which are extras, not necessary, though they really do make the OS a lot better. And Starter is supposed to be like 50 bucks at release I think, MSRP of 100 (which it's always half of the MSRP with Windows), and the next one up (Home Basic) has Aero and is supposed to be like MSRP 200. So 100-150 probably for Home Basic at launch. That's not bad at all.

I've had access to a DX10 preview since last year. It doesn't work on XP. The documentation that came with it said it doesn't work on XP and it never will. DX10 requires Vista's new driver model. DX10 isn't backwards-compatible with previous versions of DX or their drivers, unlike DX9 and previous, so games will need to provide multiple renderers to support older video cards.

These facts have been known for a very very long time and this is ancient news. In fact, the issue first started to circulate when it was announced that Halo 2 was using DX10, and thus wouldn't be available on any OS except Vista.

I like how when companies announce these things they act like they're doing us a favour. "DirectX10[sup]TM[/sup]/Halo[sup]TM[/sup] 2[sup]TM[/sup], exclusive to Windows[sup]TM[/sup] Vista[sup]TM[/sup]!!"

Oh yes, please limit me. I really like being dominated. Honest.

DirectX 10 is a radical departure from previous versions of DirectX. It will allow for greater overall performance but is architecturally incompatible with previous versions of Windows.

This is like whining because the Internal Combustion Engine made your horse manure shovel obsolete. Congrats, you suck and you should commit suicide.

Except that your operating system is a little more important in magnitute to your computer (really expensive to have to replace) than a manure shovel is to a buggy.

Well it's a bit different. This may be a radical change which may be expensive and hard to adjust to, but overall it's better. DirectX10 is WORLDS faster than DirectX9, making even the budget cards decently usable (in DX10 of course), and it's a lot prettier to boot. Vista also has a lot of new features which people have been screaming for in Windows (and have finally gotten), including a vectorized OS. This will make windows seem a lot cleaner and a lot smoother in actions, not to mention it will take a lot of the load off the CPU during OS use, utilizing the more powerful GPU to run everything. Also, it's look and feel is completely customizable, which is a very good thing.

The analogy could stand with the internal combustion engine versus the horse. It's still effective.

But of course, the nasty rip into Rerun for absolutely no reason was rather uncalled for, especially considering that he's a rather benign and respectable massassian. Respect--; for that.

Expensive? Maybe if you're getting the ultimate edition, yeah. I don't consider a $99 Home Basic upgrade to be terribly expensive, especially not to a PC gamer. If $99 is too much money to spend on a computer upgrade, you probably can't afford the hardware to run new games anyway.

It's not that, it's that he's a cool guy. It has nothing to do with his vocal standpoint.

And you have to see it from the consumer's perspective Jon. You're the perfect example of someone who's lost touch with his consumer roots. You know everything about the new products thus can't feel for the guys who think it's just the same old **** repackaged for more money. Don't blame them and insult them, just tell them that it's different. Teaching is good.
