The Bill, H.R. 5319, also known as the 'Deleting Online Predators Act of 2006', is still in its infancy, but in its current form, would forbid libraries from allowing access to such sites as well." Well, this would give a new thing to do when you turn 18, porn, smokes, forums, gambling, and voting.

I apologize for sounding redundant, but...
Accually, wouldn't the 'underage' Massassians still be able to access the forums, by right of the 'Grandfather Clause' (correct me if I am mistaken on the legal term)? Since, after all, they would have been registered before the passing of the proposed bill (if it ever is passed), so therefore would be protected under constitutional amendment stating that 'if a law is passed prohibiting a certain action and/or object, those possessing or attempting such action/object prior to the law passing, is exempt from punishment.'

Am I correct in this assumption? >_<
In the spirit of avoiding whatever broke part one (I'm guessing flames), I cast the first olive branch:

Genki: What a good internet man you are. You truely are America's most trusted genk.

Edit: Although I believe it's "slashdot" and not "dotslash". But whatever. This is still a family-friendly discussion, and yes, we *can* get along.

Edit 2: But I gotta say Admiral Zarn, quoting yourself? Not too classy. Not classy at all.

Admiral Zarn: Yes, ex post facto, as I believe it to be called in legal parlance, would technically be in effect here. However, due to the sweeping nature of the ban, I doubt that enforcement of this would be tenable.

The most likely situation (were an unlikely-to-pass bill like this to actually make it into law) would be that websites would be obliged to ask users for their age when registering... wait, doesn't that already happen?!

Also, if national identity cards are issued, those could potentially play a role in the ban. It'd be hard to verify the join date of users on privately owned sites, too.

Excellent rebuttal, Grismath! You certainly have a good command of the English language.

Edit: That said, I'm sure Admiral Zarn will find it within himself to deliver a surgical strike of a riposte, as long as he doesn't quote himself again.

I agree... Also, this would not help in any sort of way to help stop, or even reverse, the current, and even more present, problems that exist on the internet. Plus (I'm sure its already been stated once before) that the internet at current has a lot of problems, and attempts to correct these would be like, say, cleaning up a landfill by hand.

Are you sure you hired him to grow the plants and not burn them? Because that's where the lawyers get you, in the details.

Aha! Superb analogy! Things are really going great for this thread!

drizzt2k2: I hope you're not feeling too badly that Rob burned you with a classic "your mom" burn. One minute you're chatting up a storm on the internet, the next you've fallen into your own trap. Just don't sweat it, it happens to everyone.

Which reminds me, I had a thing going where I would say "burn" after each successful burn. I forgot.

BURN!

And a special thank-you goes to Rob for using the term "sexual intercourse" in place of more vulgar slang such as "banging," "screwing" or "doing it with". Thank you Rob for helping keep the internet at a rating of PG or less.

Edit: Also, don't hover your cursor over the spoiler tags in Rob's post if you're easily offended. I know it seems like Rob is providing insider info on the hottest new movies, but he is really just concealing the punch line of a scathing and not entirely appropriate insult.

I think a lot of people would be d by how many asanine bills are proposed by congress. Fortunately, most of them never make it past the committee level so they never make ot to the floor for vote.

If more parents were responsible enough to raise their children properly, we wouldn't have such discussions or laws. Unfortunately, thousands upon thousands of parents aren't responsible enough and the government, as usual, thinks that they must step in and compensate for bad parenting. I personally think that this is the wrong direction to go, but it's no suprise.

I don't yet have children, but I can guarantee you that once I do, I'll make sure that I raise them to use the web responsibly and to spend more time away from the computer than on it. Too many kids these days are spending +75% of their lives on the web.
2006-06-01, 6:20 AM #27
I'm not sure I have an issue with the government trying to compensate for bad parenting but I do have a problem with this law. It is most certainly not the way to deal with the issue.

Edit: And from what it sounds like, it would ban minors from multiplayer gameplay.

Meh. I'm gonna be 20 next Tuesday AND i live in Canada, so i don't exactly have to worry about this. Ah, how the internet (and US policy) has changed over the years [lapses into nostalgia].

Have you ever played Counterstrike online? Minors SHOULD be banned from multiplayer gameplay! (at least the ones below age 14... no offense Zloc)

None taken. I don't game on PC very much, therefore I don't game online at all. Atleast, not yet. When I get the new computer I might consider it.

So... they will enforce this how? The law will be obsolete before it hits the books, even if it does pass. If they're going to ban forums they should ban high school to. Can't get drugs off the old internet.

Now now, the internet can be very dangerous, yes, that 0.001% of it is VERY harmful. Maybe we should just do away with it, the internet I mean.
