So, after having my computer for 2 years and the whole 2 years having no virus protection or scanners and having my firewall turned off, I did a free online scan of my hard drive. Its been running for 20 minutes, and its only 1/3 of the way done with my hard drive. Here are the current results:

:( I spent 3 or 4 hours in my school's computer center getting my hard drive reformatted earlier this year.
Fincham: Where are you going?
Me: I have no idea
Fincham: I meant where are you sitting. This wasn't an existential question.

On a related note, I finally have a Windows XP system after 2 years of running Ubuntu on my laptop and Windows 2000 on my desktop. My desktop was getting bloaty and I suspected some spyware/malware that passed through Spybot/Adaware and PCCillin. So I went ahead and formatted and now I finally have a Windows XP system at my home.

1) Symantec's virus scanners suck, mostly because they're the main target of most viruses when they try to avoid scanners.

2) Try housecall by trendmicro.

3) Uh, you use IE. Kind of duh.

4) I haven't checked in a while, probably don't have anything though.

You'd be better off trying to get a real piece of client software on your computer.

Last I heard, BitDefender 9 was a good bang for your buck.

Yoshi speaks truth on Symantec. Their product is ****. You are waaaaaay better off with AVG and/or Avast.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I use Trend Micro's PC Cillin, it's never given me any problems and it's always up to date.

PC Cillin is definitely a good investment to make. Their Internet Security Suite is cheaper than anything Symantec or McAfee have to offer, and it's just plain better, IMO.

So the scan completed with 859 total virus/threats. DJ Yoshi: No, I dont use internet explorer I just did it because the scan plugins didnt work with my mozilla. Die.

I downloaded Cillin. Works pretty good.

I'll most likely get a free copy through MSDNAA anyway. If not, then I'll pick it up at student discount price.

This is one of the many reasons why I love FreeBSD. However, I have had good success with Windows when using Spywareblaster and Spybot to block most the malware.

I used to do that too. Run for insane lengths of time without a virus scan/firewall/spywar scan and using Internet Explorer. Not to mention that I downloaded music and files off Kazaa and what not.

Need less to say, my computer was a virtual high-alert quarantine sector.

It seems to take about half a year for software to get released to MSDNAA - we only just got VS 2005.

I'm pretty sure it's been there since the beginning of the semester. I remember asking Derek whether I should use that or go with 2003.

Indeed, where is this perception that reformatting your computer so much is the best way to treat your computer?

Back in the dialup days running Windows 98 I ran all my family's PCs without firewalls, never had any problems. These days there's just absolutely no way you can get away with that. I remember building a PC for someone a couple years ago, connecting it to the internet before installing a firewall (no router either), and by the time I had downloaded one it had already been compromised by some worm (it was one of the big ones like blaster or something).

Running Win98 without any firewall is still no problem, because 98 doesn't provide any services per default.
