I can't find anywhere an accurate number of how many custom armors are unlockable in this game.. i found one site that tells you how to get 79 of the armors... but in the descriptions, they hint at there being over 225 exclusively male armors, and over 300 exclusively female armors. I can't confirm it anywhere.

OK, I have a strategy guide here and one of the pieces of armor (male) can be unlocked by obtaining 225 pieces of male armor and to unlock another piece of armor (female) you need to obtain 308 pieces of female armor. So there is your answer.

EDIT: To make this legitimate the male armor I looked at was Hyper Helmet and the female armor is Goddess Helm.
