I need a record player
2006-06-05, 2:38 PM #1
I recently, as in today, scored about 120 vinyl records, for free.

And I want to play them. My old record player is busted. Also, it's important to note THAT THESE RECORDS ARE ALL IN PRISTINE CONDITION. No scratches, marks, or ANYTHING on the actual records.

So I want a really awesome record player that is gentle on records, and will not rattle. I'm probably going to have to put the player on top of my amplifier, which is on top of my speaker right now..

Something which can do some sort of surround sound output would be nice, but I don't need it.

I have no idea what to buy, or what to look at. Other than gear driven is the way to go.

All I can say is I hope you know what speeds they are. Other than that, I can't help you.

To be gentle on records, you want a low burn cartridge and a high quality spinny table thing with padding and some such. And don't try to be MC Hawking and scratch those *****es. :D

I'm no expert, this is what I know from mine.

generally, LPs are 33 and 7 inchers are 45

I got a decent Sony record player from Best Buy for Christmas. It was around $100.

33s are the regular ones, 45s are the little ones with huge holes in the middle, and 78s are the oldddd ones that shatter if you touch them. [/wisdom]

You can probably find something pretty good and a thrift store and but a new needle on it. End up costing you less than $20.

Some 45s don't have the huge hole in the middle. It's not like it matters though, your player should come with a converter.

See the thing is, I want something of semi-quality.

In the $300-400 range.

Sounds stupid right? But I'm told thats what you have to pay for something that won't **** up your **** all up.

You could want to rise that range into $15,000.

Or then not.

I wonder if it's even worth the money.

Sweet deal.

I think I have almost every original Led Zep release in here, and the records themselves are in PRISTINE CONDITION. I mean they seriously look like they've never been played. Which is why I want a record player that isn't going to kick all this new found awesome's ***.

I recommend a Technics SL-1200MK2. It's around $450.

I actually don't know much about turntables but I know this Technics one is the standard for DJ's everywhere. And they look beautiful.

Here's a black one from musician's friend selling for $399 (it's actually the SL1210, meh): http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Technics-SL1210MK2-Turntable?sku=807058&src=3WFRWXX

I prefer the look of the silver one but it's all up to you.

Theres plastic wrap over several of them, and there are even a few in there that have never been opened.

Hey, that's golden, man. Nothing like a good old vinyl record!

By the way, there are also 12" records that play on 45 rpm, but it's always printed on the label.

My record player is pretty old. I should get a good DJ-set too, so I haven't really got any tips.
