Starship Troopers 2

Wow, with all these movie threads recently, I can't believe nobody has posted about Starship Troopers 2. It was recently released straight to DVD. This movie followed in the footsteps of the first one, and personally, I can't wait for ST3. Instant classic.

I mean... look at these rave reviews!

yeah, EVERYTHING I have heard about the movie was nothing but badness.

horrible lighting, cheesey CGI, bad acting, horrible lines and dilivery and cliche plot.

but it was a budget film, I've seen the first and I didn't mind it so bad, it was kinda cool for it's time. But due to the reviews, I'll possibly rent it and see it, but i doubt i'll ever buy it.

I saw 5 minutes of it, found it to be a cheesy sci-fi badness movie, and swore it off from there.

"Johnny Rico!"

Ugh... that movie was horrible. I can't believe they are made a sequel. The first movie was bad because of these reasons:

1) Cheese fest. The gore was so over-the-top it came off cheesy and the bugs themselves were laughably cheesy. So much much cheese that you are encouraged to bring a bag of pretzels, a box of crackers, and some plain macroroni bits before watching.
2) Acting was horrible. Denise Richards was the worst offender.
3) Nudity was done in bad taste. If ya gonna show nudity, make it seem more realistic instead of a stupid "co-ed shower". Also, if you gonna flash boobs, why not Denise Richards? She was the only one with a bust size worth showing off :P
4) Fighting bugs that lame wasn't too fun to watch. If they were xenomorphs, that would be different. Fighting giant slugs and wasps isn't fun.

Ok, enough of my rant about the movie. Good thing it went to DVD. Too bad for the DVD though. I feel sorry for it.

Then you missed the point of the first one.

It was supposed to be cheesy, thats why it was so fun. The book when it originally came out was very controversial. The movie just kind of spoofed the 50s sci-fi movies.

It always pisses me off when people say "the acting was bad" or something, as if that was a reason in itself, and then don't elaborate.

"The movie sucked. The acting was bad." <-This is stupid.

And the whole point of Starship Troopers was that it satirizes the novel.

The University of North Carolina has finally found a network server that, although missing for four years, hasn't missed a packet in all that time. Try as they might, university administrators couldn't find the server. Working with Novell Inc., IT workers tracked it down by meticulously following cable until they literally ran into a wall. The server had been mistakenly sealed behind drywall by maintenance workers.

The beauty of free speech is that if people don't feel like elaborating, they don't have to. Instead, they can continue living life knowing that someone is pissed off over something that is trivial at best.

If someone thinks the acting was bad, then I believe that's all that has to be said. I don't expect everyone I talk to about a movie to give me a completely objective review; that would just be silly [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

The first was good, I have not seen the second movie, so i'm reserving my harsh comments until i do, but from the reviews and other people opinions, I'm just stating what I heard, and what I heard was that the acting in the SECOND starship troopers movie was terrible.

I think he said the first one was bad, not because it was really GOOD, but because that was his OPINION.

I liked the first one. It's a brainless movie, but it's entertaining. It certainly satisfied my sadistic thirst for blood, gore and violence in a way that the opening sequence of saving private ryan never could.

I haven't seen the second one yet, but the original was alright. I still want to see a movie actually based on the book. Or better yet, movies of some of his better work, like Stranger in a Strange Land, Friday, or The Cat Who Walks Through Walls. Meh, I can always dream.

I saw the second... it kept me mildly entertained. Its actually more like an episode of "Outer Limits" or "Twighlight Zone" than it is like the first movie.

On another interesting note... apparently ST1 was not originally based on the novel by Heinlein. Someone came up with a script, that by coincidence, was extremely similar to the novel. This was noticed during pre-production, and rather than change the story, they bought the rights to the movie version of the book, and called the movie Starship Troopers. This is why some things differ so much from the book... like Dizzy being a guy in the book, and Carmen and Doogie Howser's character being much more important in the movie than they were in the book.

I heard Dizzy wasn't even a major character in the book. In fact, her death was like one line, and it was more like:
"Hey, Dizzy died."
"Oh crap, that sucks."
"Yeah, let's go get drunk."
"Ok."

I think the first movie was awesome... Literally one of the best movies I've ever seen (of course masquerading as one of the stupidest movies of all time). Actually, that was the idea, though. It's not supposed to be taken seriously (for example, when the find General Owen hiding in the closet and he falls to the ground, Ace says, "Officer on the deck!" ... classic). But, at the same time, there is a lot of symbolism and political statements being made that hide under the surface and must be dug for (watch the DVD with the Director's commentary if you don't see it).

1) Yes and no. The entire movie is *supposed* to be cheesy. That's one of the main elements. And yet, even so, the bugs and other special effects are incredibly well done for its time. Seriously, the movie looks like it was made 7 months ago, rather than 7 years ago. I think the visual effects hold their own against many movies, even today.

2) Ok, the acting wasn't supurb, I'll agree there. But once again, the movie is not supposed to be taken seriously, and I think they actually did a decent enough job that the cheesy acting flows perfectly with the overall cheesy feel.

3)On Nudity... Typically, I'd agree with you. I am generally against nudity in all movies. However, I believe that shower scene was done very well, and quite tastefully. What better way to show the utter equality between male and female in this society? The job of the shower scene was to shock the audience into realizing the male/female equality in this futuristic society, and it did that quite nicely, by showing us that the young men and women of that society are completely at ease with eachother in the nude, and see eachother as complete equals... The thought that one gender might be better than the other doesn't even *enter* their minds, and I think the shower scene shows that quite nicely.

4)Bugs lame?? You must be joking. The bugs design rocked (except the Brain Bug, I'll give you that one). I love how the designs are so different... Especially cool is the Tanker (giant beetle that shoots the orange acid), and the scene where Johnny kills the one with the gernade was awesome...

Actually, I would say it's far from brainless... The undertones of the film are a constant political discussion of socialism.

There were no major characters in the book except for Johnny (which was only a nickname, his real name was Juanito). And no, there was no love scene with the male Dizzy either.

Just to point all this in the direction of some interesting stuff, anyone watched Roughnecks? Completely CGI'd version of Starship Troopers, makes a couple minor nods to the movie but otherwise writes its own version of the thing. Actually not too bad, in a cheesy sci-fi kind of way, I enjoyed it.
