Suggestions for a LAN Party
2006-06-09, 9:14 AM #1
I'm hosting the 3rd ~annual NERD NITE tomorrow from roughly dusk till dawn. I still have a lot of cleaning/preparing to do, and while I want it to be spontaneous, I at least want to have a general idea of what kinds of games we're going to play. Since this is occuring in my dungeonesque basement, we could conceivably play until we all pass out, but that may not be the best idea.

General Schedule (times are just general blocking estimations): (NERD NITE 3: "I'm too old for this...")

8 PM People start to show up. Setup computers/configure network/solve "I'm stupid and can't use my computer" problems.

9 PM Play Call of Cthulhu: DCotE while Rogue Spear is installing.

9:30 PM Play Rogue Spear co-op until "latecomers" arrive.

10:15 PM Play Call of Duty 2 while Valve games and Operation:Flashpoint are installing.

11 PM Play Operation: Flashpoint (with mods)

12 AM Play Counter Strike: Source

1 AM Play Super Smash Bros. while JK/MotS, B2, and EU2 install.

1:30 AM Play JK - Custom Mod I Made for LAN Party

2 AM Play RoX Co-op - Custom Quest for LAN Party

3 AM Play Baldur's Gate 2

8 AM Play Europa Universalis 2

10 AM Everyone leaves and I collapse

I'm going to make a poster, I may take some pictures, and I'll have people bring snacks, energy drinks, order pizza, etc.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for preparation?

Seems short, starting that late only until the morning? And thats a tight schedule, not much room for unexpected problems and such. It might make more sense to play fewer games for longer periods of time.

You need friends for this.

Is it strickly LAN? I'd love to jump on some CoD2 action you have there.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

We only have it on my friend's XBox 360 and I don't have Live, otherwise you'd be more than welcome. The console games are just to make sure we're gaming nonstop while stuff installs on our computers, so it would just be one or two matches of that respective game. As for the late start, one or two of the players won't arrive until later on.

You're right about fewer games, though... maybe something more like this:

8 PM People start to show up. Setup computers/configure network/solve "I'm stupid and can't use my computer" problems. Install Steam/RS. (depends on avg. system specs of everyone)

9 PM Play CounterStrike: Source or Rogue Spear until "latecomers" arrive.

10:30 PM Latecomers arrive. Play CoD2 on XBox 360 while Op:Flash installs.

11 PM Play Operation: Flashpoint (with mods)

1 AM Play Super Smash Bros. on GameCube while JK, BG2, and EU2 install.

2 AM Play JK - Custom Mod I Made for LAN Party

3 AM Play Baldur's Gate 2

8 AM Play Europa Universalis 2

10 AM Everyone leaves and I collapse

I can't see you getting very far in Baldur's Gate 2 in just 5 hours.

Other than that...you might want to leave a bit more time for Valve games to install :P

A great, simple lan game my friends and I play suprisingly often is Armagetron.

Livid, neither can I: We've decided we'll play until our entire party dies without ressurections and whatnot. So we may not even make it that long. Plus, our party is often hilariously disfunctional. (can you imagine that there could be players *more* distracting to a team's success than me?!)

WC3 was on my mind, but we're RTS junkies. I'm frankly still tired of the genre.

I would suggest Bontago as a fun time-filler. Also, I personally hate CS:S. Go with DoD:S or HL2DM.

The thing is, we only have 6 guys, so it'd have to be something 3v3-able. I'm leaning towards Rogue Spear, anyway.

I know it's too late now, but F.E.A.R. and Painkiller are amazing LAN multiplayer games. Lots of screaming at eachother.
"Jayne, this is something the Captain has to do for himself"

You'll never get 8 people to play that many different games. I've been to 2.5 million billion LAN parties and unless you're Adolf Hitler, they're going to end up playing what they want to play (I remember dozens of LAN parties where I couldn't get anyone to quit playing Counter-Strike).

+1

And this is all nonsense. The best (small @ home) LAN parties are completely unorganized. Everyone decides on a game (or 2 games played at the same time, whatever), and just drink beer while they're installing.
