It's either this, or becoming a hooker. What with all the spider eating, hookering might not even pay well, anymore.

A large part of me, however, can't wait to get PAID to bother people. I wonder how many ways I can trick people into talking to me long enough to get paid?

"Hey Jerry, what's up?"
"Um... Who's this?"
"Oh, it's Brandon. I was just calling to see if you wanted to come over for dinner tomorrow night."
"Um..."
"I just got these nice new CutCo Cutlery Knives! They are astounding. They come in a package of 37 premium knives for only 19.99!"
"That's uh... that's nice."
"But wait! If you call now, they'll even throw in a free spud pealer! I'm telling you, it's a fantastic deal."
"Sounds like it... Ah, Brandon, How do you know my na-"
"Anyway, I've got to head out to the grill. You still like your steak Medium-Rare? Of course you do! Hey: Tell you wife she looks fantastic in those sun dresses she wears when she's gardening. See ya Jer!"

I. Can't. Wait.

Working at Harbor Freight Tools to make rent and bills. Launching a webcomic and a pass around map/podcasting site by the end of summer to keep income going through the school year. Maybe doing research in the fall. You can't beat a $1000 stipend.

I've been trying to get my webcomic going for a while, myself. I don't have the resources to do it, however.

What resources, exactly? (Not trying to be an ***, I'm just curious). I'm using GIMP to draw, Open Office Draw for word bubbles and text, and publishing it on my space on Cool Matty's server. Doing the layout and graphical elements by hand (no Dreamweaver). If I need more storage or bandwidth, I will deal with it when the time comes. I'm not expecting great returns on the comic, but hopefully I'll be able to sell some shirts or something.

Steal my dreams and sell them back to me.....
2006-06-12, 2:14 PM #7
The site part is what I'm struggling with. I want a very specific design layout and I want it to work the way I want it to. Gammasts was supposed to help me, as was CoolMatty, as was another guy. All three fell through because they couldn't afford the time.

I MIGHT pay a guy I know to do it, as he's got some real skill doing it, but that might be more detrimental than helpful.

No way... it's not one of those... I buy a certain number of products, then sell it to people by calling them myself, is it?

The lady on the phone says it's a 15 dollar an hour job, WITHOUT the copay.

Bah, this better not suck.

Vector sent me a LETTER asking me to work for them. Wtf.

2006-06-12, 2:29 PM #13
I got the same letter.

After reviewing their site, I literally have to set appointments with FRIEND AND RELATIVES and try to sell them ****.

Not to mention, I have to PAY for a set of demonstrational knives to show off.

Eh, this job is starting to sound like it sucks gigantic assburgers.

I might go work for Cell 1, instead.

Just go with a standard telemarketing job. You'd be surprised how blatantly non-existent the DNC registry is. My mother's a telemarketer.
The key is to grab people's attention. Give yourself a psuedonym that sounds like you're famous or something, like Leroy Brown or Gary Busey, and then when people ask, say it's just a coincidence, or your parents named you after him/her.

You turn me on like no foot ever has.

...

So I get to the place, and there's stairs leading up to the office, and no elevator. Let me clarify: This building is a freaking garden center. There's a little flight of stairs in the back with suites in it. A pregnant 14 year old and her 35 year old black guy passed me as they went up into their apartment.

The owner of the building was replacing locks on a soon-to-be diner located in the back area. I asked him where the office was, just to be sure. He offers to go up and get them.

About 10 minutes later, he comes down with an 18 year old girl wearing a women's suit trailing. I scratch my stubbly chin realizing I hadn't shaved. She comes down and apologizes for the inconvenience. Whatever. She also says: "By the way, maybe you didn't know, but the job requires some traveling..." I replied "Well yeah, I did some research on your company, and I don't know if I can even take a job doing that, despite the situation all together. How about I fill out an application, and if anything a little more apropriet comes up, we'll talk? I'm sure you've got some associates or sister companies who might be interested in me."

So she goes back up and sends a college student down who looks too big for a suit. He hands me an app and makes random small talk, avoiding the fact that he knows I won't be able to work for him.

I guess I'm going to try and get a job at Cell 1, instead. A friend's ex boyfriend works there, and he likes me, so he'll probably try to get me a job.

Well, at the moment I'm working at a specialty plastics place. Mon/Wed/Fri I'm back in the plant, doing whatever small tasks need done until 4:30, when pretty much everyone leaves. At which point the few of us still there do as little as possible. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, however, I'm up in the office area doing laser engraving. All in all, not bad, even though the pay sucks.

I'm still doing data entry for Sayers. Every Saturday, 9 til 4, just tapping away at a keyboard and occasionally sorting through paper. The pay's pretty good (at least, for now) at about £40 per day, and the people I work with mean it doesn't get as boring as it sounds. I'll probably be asked to work a few days every week during the summer, although I might not =/ I'm leaving in September after 2 years of working there, because I'll need something closer to the university halls, which means a job in the city centre.

We break those Harbor Freight tools all the time. At least they have dirt cheap prices.

Right now I just work at Home Depot as a Millwork Specialist, but I should get a stipend in the fall while I continue my Master's.

I just started working for Sam's Club as a cashier making $9.40 an hour, which will go up to $9.70 or something after 90 days. It's easy as sin. I had orientation on Saturday, trained with another cashier on Monday, and was already on a register by myself today. That might be because of what my last job was, working for a division of Radioshack in a kiosk INSIDE Sam's Club. So I've konwn pretty much everyone there for almost a year already. I'm working 30 something hours for Sam's and something like 16 for the kiosk, but it's really weird getting off at 3:25, walking out to my car to change shirts, then walking back and going back to work. Heh. :)

I can't say that it surpises me. I figured the tools would suck from the prices and the brand names which I've never heard of. I was hoping to pick up a Dremel with my store discount, but I'm not sure if it's such a great idea if it's going to break after I use it all of 3 or 4 times.

[Edit] I just thought of something. It seems odd that we offer Extended Service Protection on our tools for two years for $10 if they are so prone to breaking. If I have aa $90 impact wrench and it breaks, even if it's only once, the company is out $80. I think they rely on people not buying Service Protection, even though they've told us to push it as much as we can.

People who buy cheap tools surely don't buy service plans.

A couple of years, I did cutco, and I put in a lot of effort and got very little back for my trouble.

The base pay might sound like a good deal, but what they don't tell you upfront is that you get paid either Base pay OR Commission, but NOT BOTH.

Plus, there's all those stupid motivational team meeetings that you have to go to (unpaid, of course) , you have to furnish your own leads, and they don't compensate you for gas.

No wonder the turnover rate is huge.
