What's the deal with steam?

It updates to 100% three times then says that service is temporarily unavailable. Steampowered.com says that steam is online.

All I want is the HL2 demo...I don't see why I have to go through all this crap.

I didn't want the demo bad enough to go through that.

i love it when people make steam sound worse than the holocaust.

Does this even deserve a thread?

Um. Apparently it was my firewall. Heh.

Steam isn't worse than the holocaust, but I think maybe I am...

Not as bad as the Holocaust, but it comes very close.

It deleted my HL1 save files, and I had to completely uninstall Steam/re-install HL1 and delete my old saves (I tried copying them) for it to even WORK again. I tried running it outside of Steam, and it was Steam that messed it up.

I don't like Steam because while it is "revolutionary" in the sense it allows you to buy games online and keep them forever if you have the password to your account, it is slow as hell and unfair to those on dial up. I had dial up when I bought HL2, only to spend 3 hours online updating/unlocking the files to find out I CAN'T RUN THE GAME.

And it was not me who messed up the HL files. I didn't install any mods, didn't mess with the files, I just booted it up one day and got an error, and when I restarted the game got the same error.

Steam sucks.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Steam is a hassle sometimes. That's why I never download the games, I always buy them and get hard copies.

But don't you still have to log on and download things?

It's not 'unfair' to those on dialup. You get what you pay for, and you choose what you pay for. Steam isn't responsible for your connection speed.
2006-06-19, 2:25 PM #15
Yeah. HL2/Ep. 1 you need to get online and unlock the files, which requires internet. And then you need to update (oh, I'm sorry, I can stop that, and you're welcome those of you who would kill me because I was wrong).
I had a blog. It sucked.
2006-06-19, 2:28 PM #16
Wtf saber? I had no idea you had to spend 3 hours online on dial up getting the game to work. I paid for a game, not 3 hours online trying to get the damn thing to work, and THEN a game. It's bloated and slow, even on satellite. I get 1/4 my regular download speed on it even now.

Yes. It is unfair because I expected at the most having to register the game once when it said internet connection required. Not to have to download several large files. They should have specified on the bottom of the box what the connection was for.

"Internet Connection for installation and updating"
I had a blog. It sucked.

LOL, I just remembered you hate Steam with a passion. Yeah, I had my Steam account hijacked once and had to go out and buy new games. That was really crap.

Sounds like a Half-Life problem, not a Steam problem.

The first time I got to use Steam was a few weeks ago when I bought the HL1 Anthology. So far, I think it's been pretty damn cool. The downloads have been fast and consistant, and it provides a centralized program to take care of HL1, Blue Shift, Opposing Force etc. I've heard bad things from a lot of people, but right now it's been ok.

Ok, yes. I do like Steam. It's nice to have all my Valve games in one central hub that automatically update. I don't like how I (I don't, I'm not saying no one does) get slow download rates and my HL1 problem. Aside from that however, it is good.
I had a blog. It sucked.

What, are we going to say HL2 is unfair to your computer because it's too slow to run it as well?

Steam works great for me. Most of the times it's on the user's end (I'm not referring to any game bugs). I have no complaints.

Glad we got Brian's usual post though!
2006-06-19, 5:04 PM #27
steam has been mediocre at best for me, slow updates, hl2 no longer works for whatever reason, and quite often cs:s freezes in the middle of trying to upload to a server, a good idea with many more bugs to be worked out, i see the future being much brighter than the present.

I've had some problems, but it's better now.
Namely the problem was that Steam and HL2 Demo combined are something like 2.7 gigs, which would have killed my previous hard drive, but fits comfortably on my 120 gig behemoth (which I just learned is more than half full after a month of use).

-I understand that only 60% of Episode One is actually on the disc. You don't just need Steam to run it, you need Steam for it to exist at all.

No, that's just I misjudged how powerful my computer was, and thought it was better than it was. But tofu told me to turn down the DirectX level in it and see how that works, so sometime I'm going to install it again (all what, 5 gigs?) and try that.

Point Insertion was really good. We Don't Go To Ravenholm was okay...which level is most representative of HL2?

Steam is awesome when it feels like working.

But it sucks for other reasons, than it not working.

I'm just going to drop my usual "I effing HATE Steam" comment and leave.

Ahem..... I ****ing hate Steam.

Steam sucks.

1) HL1 != Steam.
2) It's very revolutionary, but revolution is not always good.
3) That's what minimum specs are for.

No offense but none of those problems can really be attributed to Steam.

What's the deal with the Steam whinage? Unless Steam melted your hard drive or brain or otherwise metaphorically skull****ed you, please whine about something more important, such as

a. your internet connection

b. your failure to read up on the requirements of Steam

c. Gabe Newell's fatness
