Alpha Blending in Win2k
2004-06-22, 5:32 PM #1
Ok, I know Win2k can do Transparencies, I'm using some right now on Trillian, Samurize, and the Download Window for Firefox. However, when it comes to icons which have shadows that are supposed to gradient out, it shows them as one big black blob. I'm assumeing that is Alpha Blending, not transparency, and that there is a difference between the two. Either way, is it possible to make Win2k display those as the gradients they are meant to be and not as black blobs?

It's really a curiosity question, I can manage just fine without. I guess I'm just not understanding how it can handle a partial transparency with the above said programs, and not be able to handle a shadow.

*bump*

Comeon, I know someone out there has at the very least a vague idea.

I don't know much about Win2000 but in XP in order to set the icons to be transparent you go to System Properties->Advanced->Performance and select "Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop".
Free your mind, use Open Source.

I've programmed my windows before to be transparent. And on that thought I really believe it is all in the program's design. Not EVERY window can do transparency. Rephrase. Every window is capable of being transparent just not every window is programmed to be transparent.

I've figured that part out. I suppose the real question I have is why it can handle something like a partial transparency, but not an alpha blend, which is, basically, to my knowledge, just a series of partial transparencies.

Well I know if you have and ATI card I suppose you could use Hydrovision for shadowing effects and transparancy... its not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but its something.

I think I dumped my version of Hydovision shortly after installing the card I got. It was being really, REALLY annoying to me and I couldn't find a way to make it stop, so I pulled it's plug.

Well if its been a bit I suggest you look into it again... they make upgrades on their software quite a bit.
