Okay, so I bought Deus Ex: Invisible War yesterday from Gamestop for about eight bucks. I started to play, then figured I ought to play Deus Ex first, so I ordered it online, and it should be here in about a week. So, here's my question:

Will it ruin Deus Ex in any way to go ahead and play Invisible War?

Probably.

Mind you I haven't played Invisible War, but seeing as it's a sequel, I'd say there's a fair chance.

It will ruin Deus Ex if you play Invisible War. Not because of anything having to do with sequels/storylines so much, but mostly because Invisible War sucks so much more than Deus Ex it's not even funny.

Yes. Give Invisible War to someone else, wait for the original, play it, love it.

Massassi is choc full of Invisible War haters, so expect just about every answer to be tainted by that.
Personally I found the original very slow paced. Very long and boring.
Don't get me wrong though, there was some good stuff in Deus Ex, it just took a lot of long and boring to get there.

It wasn't so much that IW was bad, it's jsut that the original was so good and the sequel had really high expectations, which it didn't meet. It was an ok game on it's own.

Eight bucks? Geez, I went to NYC and bought it for 5 bucks brand new :P

Oh well, I don't know how the original might turn out if you play IW first, but generally DX:IW should be DX: A Lost Opportunity, since that's what it is. I didn't enjoy it as much as DX, but I don't hate it as much as many DX'ers do. It had many good elements, but the rest was like my asshair, not good.

But the original getting ruined because of IW... would be just stupid.

Interestingly enough when I'm on a "vacation" in Middle Finland and manage to find a public computer with an Internet connection I go here and reply to a Deus Ex thread. Frrreaky.

DX:IW wasn't horrible, but it certainly didn't rise above mediocrity. While DX is kinda sex on a cd-rom.

I'd suggest playing DX first, since there are some storyline parts that are continued.

Invisible War as a game when not compared to the original is a solid game. Play the original first, then you'd understand IW more. But when you play IW, try not to think that it's a Deus Ex game XD

Massassi? More like the gaming world. Check out all the reviews of Deus Ex. Then Invisible War.

Also, how could you call Deus Ex slow-paced? Unless you took your sweet time, sucked at it, or just didn't know what you were doing, there's no way you could. It had a lot of action in the beginning and it kept rolling for a while. Once you hit Paris things slowed down, but still.

Ditto ZOOikes. Play the original first. There are characters and such that carry over into DX:IW.

I too just played DX:IW for the first time a few weeks ago. Like everyone else, it was ok, but not as great as the original. Be patient and wait for the first installment.

He probably meant slow paced as in it wasn't the typical arcade shooter like Quake or UT. Just guessing, though.

Despite not standing up to the original, IW was a pretty good game in my opinion. At least, in that I had fun playing it. And that's what makes a good game in my opinion. I'd recommend playing the original first, though, because some characters are recurring, but mostly because it comes first in the timeline and I'm pedantic that way :P

Deus Ex /is/ slow-paced, and that's one of the reasons it's so good. Contrary to those old Sega commercials, games don't need to be fast-paced to be good. Slow-paced games tend to be less mindless.

I disagree that it's slow paced--necessarily. You could make it like Quake or UT if you wanted, but good lord would that make the game so unfun. As Livid said it's not going to be "kill-a-minute" type action, unless you go for that kind of thing. It's mostly stealth mixed in with a lot of killing. I just took it to mean it was slow-paced as in the storyline, which the storyline was most DEFINITELY not slow-paced. Things were crazy as hell through the game, I thought.

I love how you can make the game as fast or slow paced as you wanted. You could go all stealthy, making turrets take people out, and knock them on the back of the head OR you could go in guns blazing *OR* have a shield up and run by people whacking them with the Dragon Tooth.

its also possible to beat DX without firing a single shot, or killing anyone.

It's also possible to win by killing every civillian you see, other than story-required ones. You can beat the game by having the police constantly chase you while you insta-gib children with your sword.

I consider DX to be the best single player game experience of my lifetime. It is one of the few reasons that I only buy a game every 1 to 1.5 yrs. I have been spoiled by its greatness. It was an awesome combination of FPS action, RPG sophistication, a novel's storyline, and a high quality soundtrack (I bought the Game of the Year edition which included a soundtrack CD). Few games of its kind exist, let alone force you to think about choices.

Now that I have my fanboyism out of the way, back to topic. Although I never played IW due to its mediocre reviews in comparison to the original (this might be unfair because the reviews do not independently evaluate IW out of the context of its series), play them in order. There is a lot in the first game that will make things more relevant.

Yes, it will ruin it, and I'm speaking strictly storyline-wise here. I have no real dislike for DX:IW.

Actually, I heard that you don't really have to kill anyone in the game (bots don't count) except for anna navarre and gunter hermann . You can use tranquilizer darts/stun prod on anyone else or avoid them entirely.

When I had to fight Walton Simons in the Ocean Lab, I simply ran away during my first time; I thought I found a bug too avoid him. The cool thing was that it was not in fact a bug; I jumped out of my chair when he just appeared out of the shadows at the Area 51 bunker.

On my first playthrough I didn't even notice Simons on the Ocean Lab, I just resurfaced without even getting into a fight. Sneaky triggers.
