I'm looking for a program that will take a .avi file and compress it into a .divx file. Any suggestions?

VirtualDub or TPMGEnc do a great job.

AVI is more like a container file, it just has the audio and video streams in it and has identifiers for those streams, and lets external codecs interpret them. So you can have something "uncompressed" which is just pure bitmap and riff data in this case.

VirtualDub is awesome, but you have to make sure you have the codecs installed to use it. (If you can play the file, you can encode it, generally.)

As for .divx, .divx = .avi, in other words, no difference. Where the difference lies is in the codec used to compress the video in the .avi.
