10-digit dialing
2006-06-22, 10:16 AM #1
As of June 17th 10-digit dialing has become mandatory for my area code, because in October they're introducing a new area code that's going to serve the same geographical area.

It's been pretty funny to watch people pick up a phone, dial 7 digits, go "Ugh, 5-1-9", hang up, and dial the 10-digit number. Luckily I entered all the numbers in my cell phone with area codes, I know a lot of people that need to reprogram all their numbers.

So, to make this a little more interesting, there's a poll.

Only when I called my mom on her old cell phone. Aside from that, never.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Yon Americans have the same area code for cell phones as regular phones? I'm aghast at these cultural and regional differences.
VTEC just kicked in, yo!

On her old phone I had to dial 1-618-843-8704. The area code being 618. Her new Verizon phone, I just have to dial her regular number.

Regular phone calls are 555-5555 here still. No area code.

We still have our old four-digit number.
Sorry for the lousy German

I only have to dial an area code if I'm calling outside my area code.

Same as Jep, here in Montreal. Didn't know they did the same in Trois-Rivieres.

I've got to reprogram my cell address book now. :( A lot of my contacts had the area code programmed in, since I move between my place and my parents place a lot (different area codes), but most of my contacts here in Montreal aren't entered with the 514.

in toronto there are a couple area codes, I just programed my cell to dial the area code as well as the number.

for long distance calls you need to put a 1 infront of the number, such as 1-705-123-4567

Its a pain, especially out here. Batiscan, Trois-Rivières, and another city each have different regional codes, 819, 418, and 514. Its pretty much a guessing game each time you dial a number. Just hope you get the right one.

No, but I imagine they've had 10-digit for quite some time.

Just to clear things up, I'm talking about 10 digits being required for local calls, I think some people think I'm talking about long distance.

I voted "never used 10 digit", because my phone number is 11 digits long.

11 numbers here.

01xxx xxx xxx for most landlines. 08xxx xxx xxx for freephone, I think. 07xxx xxx xxx for mobiles. And so on.

I remember back in... 1999 was it? when they added the 1 to the phone numbers.

I always used 7 for local calls. Probably 10 digit local numbers well be used throughout in a decade or so?

In my area they were planning the same thing when pagers came out and everyone had one. Then they decided not to do it. I was glad, 7 is hard enough.

Made the switch from 7 to 10 digits a few years ago. Yeah it was pretty damn annoying at first. I guess after a while you get used to it but I don't really like it. 99% of my phone calls are 416 anyways.

Yeah but for local calls it's just 6 because you can leave off the area code.

the cleveland area gained a new area code in the late 90s. 10 digit dialing isnt required for inside the same area code, but there are people out there who would have to do 10 digits to call thier neighbour.

Pfft. My entire state is 7-digit dialing. :D

Where's the option for "my town switched from four digit dialing to seven digit dialing at some point in my life?" :P
woot!

I didn't even know there was a thing as 7 digit dialing. Here in NM we're just 505...and I think we just assume everyone else is as welll. :ninja:

Not quite. Edinburgh numbers are 7 digits for some reason just because the dialling code is only 4.
nope.
