Opens fire is the act of opening a fire.

To create an Open fire.

Sounds fine to me.

What's wrong with "opens fire?"
2006-06-25, 11:22 PM #5
It gives the impression he started to shoot people in a warehouse.

[edit: Wait, he did. What's the big deal? http://cbs4denver.com/local/local_story_176181838.html He opened fire and started fires.]
Think while it's still legal.

I think the correct term is "open fires." As in "Man open fires on others." While, according to the news article, he did indeed shoot people and light fires, the term "opens fire" is still incorrect. Check dictionary.com.

How the crap do you open a fire? You start a fire, light a fire, set a fire, but fire is not a container with which you "open" and set things ablaze.

It's all about subject/verb agreement.

A man opens fire.

The men open fire.

Duh.

No, really, say it out loud and you'll realize it sounds dumb. So, if you changed "the man opens fire" to past tense, you'd get:

"The man opened fire."

That sounds even more stupid.

"The man open fires."

"The man open fired."

I undeleted this because I like it.

It's "opens fire". Open is the verb, and the verb is what changes. "Open fires" are what you roast chestnuts on.

This happens with noun phrases too:
Passerby -> Passersby
Son-in-law -> Sons-in-law

It's that simple.

Yeah. English is not even my language, but still there doesn't seem to be anything suspicious or dim about this issue.

In certain situations you either open fire or the fire opens you.

1.) Fire is not the verb. Open is.

2.) "Sounding dumb" does not make something grammatically incorrect

3.) Opens is present tense. Present tense isn't commonly used except for caes like this.

4.) Open fire, as you're trying to use it would need to be hyphenated or something, if that's even possible.

5.) Just stop trying to argue. It's not working.

"ALL SHIPS OPEN FIRE"
the lead ship opens fire
the 2nd ship opened fire as well

open fire is a command OR a plural present tense action
opens fire is a singular present tense action
opened fire is a past tense action
Sam: "Sir we can't call it 'The Enterprise'"
Jack: "Why not!"

Well, if you say "Open fires," it could mean that you are arriving at dangerous campfires that are ... out in the open and ... your ship is made of wood ... and has the capabilities of going on land.

I agree with Judge Dredd that it sounds weird. There's certainly literary convention surrounding the "correct" way to phrase the saying; however, we're catching the saying and any other word or combination of words in the midst of an ever-evolving language. I prefer to express the event as "began to shoot." If you think "open fire" is weird, in Spanish, you "throw" bullets...
