Lightspeed!

Ok, if we can't go light speed doesn't this mean we also can't go 1/2 light speed? Because if we go .5 or greater light speed in one direction (in relation to a nearby plant or something) if another thing is traveling in the opposite direction over half of light speed, would that mean that while neither ship has reached light speed in relation to the plant they, have reach light speed in relation to each other? What gives? Do you get an error message or something? "We're sorry but The Universe has performed an illegal operation and needs to be shut down." :P Explain.
2006-06-26, 9:50 PM #2
Hm...I kinda understood that actually. My guess is that you can't be heading at over .5 lightspeed in relation to a fixed point is my guess.

But then again, I'm very uneducated in this topic.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Ohh you neeeed to read up on relativity. NOTHING can go at the speed of light except...light. Also NOTHING can go faster than the speed of light. You can go 0.5c there is nothing in physics that says you can't. You will experience time dilations and mass changes. You're talking about me going 0.5c one way and another bloke going 0.5c the other way. You would think that the bloke is travelling at exactly c. That's not right.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
2006-06-26, 11:04 PM #4
What's wierder is that if you are going at c in one direction, and pass someone who is going at c in the opposite direction, your relative velocity is not 2c, in fact it's c.

Get your noole round that!

And this, boys and girls, is why I hated Physics. Just... have some genious figure it ALLLLLLL out and then dumb it down so a first grader could understand it and I'll be happy.

The understanding of all the bundles of concepts and weird math has always eluded me.

truth. I learn more by watching paint dry than reading physics debates on the internet. You usualy have 50 people saying 50 different things. That "special olympics" picture best describes what I think of physics arguments. :P

i watched a crazy show on like history/discovery about travelling the speed of light or faster but there could be like some kind of bubble around you that would protect you from something or rather.. the more I think about it the more I dont know wtf im talking about..

Bosons and tachyons travel at-or-faster than light.
Of course, aside from, maybe, two bosons, none of that stuff has been proven to exist.

-Photons, gravitons, gluons... some other stuff... I can't remember it all.

Actually, nothing can ACCELERATE to the speed of light, there's nothing in relativity that says you can't BE faster than light, just that you can't accelerate to it.

Relativity says that the faster you go, the heavier you get. So you'd be accelarating slower and slower assuming force was constant as you approached lightspeed. So 0.5c is theoretically possible, assuming you had a perpetual source of thrust. And then there's whe whole time dilation thing. Which probably accounts to half the perception.

EDIT: Oh, and 200 degrees, that's why the call me Mr. Farenheit, I'm travelling at the speed of light, I'm gonna make a supersonic man out of you.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Right, light has to be able to go at lightspeed, somehow! :D

I actually enjoyed physics. Just knowing that there is a way to measure how much force something puts out and how friction works is cool.

The speed of light requires infinite energy. The only reason light goes the speed of light is because it has *virtually* no mass. Anyways, if something were to go the speed of light, everything everywhere would be gone, as it's being used to power the object going the speed of light.
2006-06-27, 7:31 AM #16
Lightspeed lightshmeed, Infinite Improbability is where it's at... that or a TARDIS.

Either way, I don't think two objects heading straight towards each other at 0.5c would even notice each other so it's relatively unimportant. >.>;; Unless they'd collide which would be incredibly messy.

That's not entirely true, but basically yes.

That's not strictly true. Photons travel at the speed of light and have very definite finite energies.

And if you had a massive particle travelling at the speed of light, that wouldn't require infinite energy. It's only accelerating up there that is tricky.

Just as a random tidbit of information for you all:

The fastest spaceship so far travels less than 1/4244th the speed of light.

That's quite a long way to accelerate yet, considering our current advances in spaceflight.

I was going to write a proper response explaining all this.....
.
.
.
.
.
but I can't be arsed, wiki already has one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_Light - look under "Constant Velocity Frames"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velocity_addition_formula - thats the formula you use to work out the relative speed at near speed of light speeds.

If people still have questions post them and I'll try and explain as best I can.
People of our generation should not be subjected to mornings.

You should read a book by Michio Kaku. I took one course in high-school physics, which went fine, and I'm amazed at the explanatory skill of this man. I had to go out and buy one of his books (Parallel Worlds) after he was on a BBC discussion program. Highly reccomended.

No math skill is necessary. It's all explained thoroughly, many times through the use of metaphors and every-day examples. Mind-expanding stuff to read outdoors on a bright summer night in a hammock while staring at the stars and moon above.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

Nothing travels faster than bad news. Once, a ship powered by bad news was created, and made it across the galaxy in record time. However, whenever it arrived at its destination, it was never welcome and always scared away.

Farnsworth: These are the dark matter engines I invented. They allow my starship to travel between galaxies in mere hours.

Cubert: That's impossible. You can't go faster than the speed of light.

Farnsworth: Of course not. That's why scientists increased the speed of light in 2208.

Cubert: Also impossible.
Farnsworth: And what makes my engines truly remarkable is the afterburner which delivers 200% fuel efficiency.

Cubert: That's especially impossible.

Farnsworth: Not at all. It's very simple.

Cubert: Then explain it.

Farnsworth: Now that's impossible. It came to me in a dream and I forgot it in another dream.
Cubert: Your explanations are pure weapons-grade bolog-nium. It's all impossible.

Farnsworth: Nothing is impossible. Not if you can imagine it. That's what being is a scientist is all about.

Cubert: No, that's what being a magical elf is all about.
