Windows Anti Bush campaign...

1.) Open up notepad

2.) Type: bush hid the facts

3.) Save, and close notepad.

3.) Open file

4.) WTF?!

Another thing:

Put a period at the end of it the sentence, save, open, remove period, save and notice that it saves it normally now.

Weird...

But I changed 'bush' for 'mark', and it does the same thing.

actually this is a bug with notepad. It works with any 4-3-3-5 combination string. It's because save defaults to ansi and open defaults to unicode.

The original story on /. and digg used the string "this app can break" with the same result.

TheJK, not ALL 4-3-3-5 combinations work. Only some.

Hey, you're right. I tried it with a few cuss and unmentionable 7 words and it didn't break.

It's been identified as a bitshift error, but I'm not sure why it doesn't work on all 4-3-3-5 combinations.

Well, I randomly did "peas one six flood" and that came out as boxes. I think it depends on any formatting in the text, too... a capital P had it working fine.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Notepad calls IsTextUnicode to determine if the file is UTF-16 or ANSI. As the documentation notes, some ASCII strings can trigger false positives, causing Notepad to incorrectly interpret the file as UTF-16.

even if this were somehow anti-bush, I wouldn't see how this would be an anti-bush "campaign", being that it is an easter-egg and isn't advertised or anything

...or if anything, it would be a pro-bush conspiracy since the text "bush hid the facts" disappears when you reopen it. ;)

Does this only work on XP, because I'm on 98 and it's not doing anything. :/

Windows 95/98/Me: Although IsTextUnicode is not normally supported on Windows 95/98/Me, it is supported by the Microsoft Layer for Unicode. To use this version, you must add certain files to your application, as outlined in Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems.
Requirements

Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista: Included in Windows NT 3.5 and later.
Windows 95/98/Me: Unsupported.
Redistributable: Requires Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me.
Header: Declared in Winbase.h; include Windows.h.
Library: Use Advapi32.lib.

This might be why.

Regardless of the reasons, it is really lame that this should be happening. It's f***ing notepad. Maybe their version of notepad is legacy software.

Most of the JPG's are saved in Paint Shop Pro though, to avoid übercompression.

But still, MSPaint is quite craptacular. Except 13 years ago.

no .. half of the characters aren't even standard chinese characters (or don't exist at all in chinese ..) .. the half that does exist is like "complete rubbing of jade earrings that glow, collect them" totally devoid of grammar
