I am a consumer whore

So my 4 year old, dearly beloved cell phone's(Nokia 6340i) battery kind of went on the fritz and died, so I have been forced to upgrade to a new, more trend-whore phone. I needed to anyway, as the TDMA service it used is being turned off within 5 months, according to the lady at the store.

I ended up opting for the Samsung X497 as it and an similar LG phone were the only ones offered for free, and brand recognition won me over to the Samsung. I feel like an incredible consumer whore now, with my crappy, trendy flip phone. I figured out the reason that it has speakerphone - because holding it up to my ear is incredibly uncomfortable, especially when compared to the old Nokia.

My family is on the Cingular FamilyTalk plan, one which is also over 4 years old and not even offered anymore (250 anytime, 1000 N/W minutes, $70.00USD or so per month). I'm trying to convince my father to upgrade the plan so that we can have 700 anytime rollover and unlimited N/W minutes, as there have been times in the past where we have gone over our minute allotment and ended up paying an extra $80.00 or so for the month. Also, the old plan was intended for TDMA and not GSM phones.

I just felt like sharing.
So, um, post your cellphone, or maybe a recent purchase that qualifies you as a consumer whore.

I've got a Nokia 6310i and it's the best phone I've ever had! Considering my only phone before this one was a Motorola the size and weight of a brick it might not be saying much, but I can definitely feel your pain Ric_Olie.

Why wouldn't you just buy a new battery?
2006-07-03, 6:48 AM #11
I hate telephones, so I keep it to the strict minimum of a homephone, and solely because I want a few friends and my parents to be able to reach me in case of urgency. I normally behead any telemarketers and what not.

Having a cell phone would be crazy. For me that is.

The Samsung X497 is a craptastic phone. I should know, cause I had to sell it and most of the time see the person come back and complain.

I have a Sony Ericsson W600i.

Slick little phone, has an mp3 player.

But it only has 256mb of memory. Which isn't as bad as it sounds, because I've got like 40 songs on there at 192khz.

I have a samsung sph-a560.

Not a bad little phone, but it tends to scratch fairly easily. Also, call clarity is sometimes pretty bad because the phone lacks an antenna.

A.) Because the store didn't have a battery for my particular model.

B.) Batteries tend to be around $40-$60. A new phone cost the replacement fee of $18.

Samsung T309.

Lurve it, good reception, good clarity, nice battery life.

The only thing I'd ever use a cellphone for is its GPS receiver, so I don't have one.

I have a Motorola t720. It's old, but I only use my cell phone as a phone, so it works just fine for me.

It was a four year old phone so the chances of finding a battery were probably slim. Also, he said they'd stop providing service for that type for phone fairly soon (old technology).

Motorola V360. I love my phone. There's a few things I'm not fond of, such as how far it opens when you flip it open, and a few software things, but all easy to handle.

I love using real songs as my ringtone. Right now my ring tone is Final Fantasy VII's FanFare (the song after you win a battle) I also have the main fighting theme, the boss-battle theme, Jenova Absolute, the Prelude, and Aerith's theme.

<3 FFVII and it's soundtrack.

Hehe, I have a bunch of songs from Metal Gear Solid 3 on mine. I got bored one time and assigned a different one to each group of people in my address book :P If the data cable hadn't stopped working I'd probably have a lot more neat stuff on here.

I don't have a landline, and I'm not going to pay for SkypeOut, so cell phone it is for me. Plus, my family has the family package which ends up being cheaper than everybody having their own, considering how little we talk on the phone.

I know, but the only two phones being offered for free were flip phones. I'm not about to pay anything outside of the replacement fee for a phone.

I don't understand the complaints with flip phones. I will ALWAYS take a flip phone over regular one-piece or sliding phones.

I've yet to find a flip phone that's comfortable to use, and 9/10 people I know own them.

I don't find anything wrong with the sliding ones though.
nope.

totally worth the money i spent on it. the bluetooth feature works very well... i was able to load my contacts from my laptop with no problems and the motorola hs805 earpiece works wonderfully with this phone.

i think they do have a gsm version... but i might be wrong. i just really think i've seen it with a cingular logo on the inside. (i'm on Alltel... i wish they had GSM service as well as their CDMA and TDMA... they're working on it, apparently)

edit: this thing has about 42MB of storage space on it for pics and music. i could care less about the camera but it's nice to be able to find good music and just throw it on there still in mp3 format and be able to set it as a ringer

I spent $400 on the first video camera phone about 2 years ago that sprint offered.. just about 4 months after I bought it, it was smashed by a truck..

so no more expensive cell phone purchases for me.. the one I have now was given to me by the owner of that truck that smashed my phone, it's nothing special but I really don't care as long as I have a phone.

Just finished ordering a Sony Ericsson K800i, should be mine by next Thursday.

Very spiffy little gadget - mobile phone with all the trimmings on one side, 3.2 megapixel digital camera with flash and 16x zoom on the other.
