IPOWER sucks, don't ever buy domains from them
2006-07-03, 11:58 AM #1
Nearly a week ago I attempted to register a domain for my website with IPOWER. I read mixed reviews of them, some people stating poor customer service, poor functionality (crappy control panel, downtime), others stating telemarketing calls from companies that IPOWER sold their phone numbers to. But, I thought, $3 for the first year, I'll give it a try, and give them a bogus phone number, just to be safe.

Moments after my request, I received this automated e-mail:

Dear Matt,

Thank you for your purchase! This message is to inform you that your order has
been received and will be processed shortly.

Your account is being processed for $2.95. You will receive an account setup confirmation within the next 24 hours with instructions on how to access your account. If you have any questions regarding this invoice, please feel free to contact us at order@ipower.com. We appreciate your business and look forward to a great relationship!

Thank You,

The iPower Team

24 hours, I had no confirmation e-mail. I figured, okay, I'll wait a few more days. Maybe it's just taking a while. But now, almost a week later, I have heard NOTHING. My account has not been charged, the domain has not even been reserved. Not even a notice e-mail saying something like, "Hey, your domain is on the way, sorry for the delay." Nothing, no trace of my transaction whatsoever.

So I sent them this reply:

You assured me that there would be a confirmation within 24 hours, but there has been absolutely NO shred of evidence that you have even acknowledged my purchase, save the automated confirmation e-mail. This has led me to take my business to one of your competitors. Please cancel my registration request. And please, no excuses, this is absolutely unacceptable.

I had already heard mixed reviews of your service, but chose to give you a chance based on your very low prices. But now these negative reviews have been confirmed, and you can be assured that I will recommend to all my friends and associates that they do NOT use your service. If you wish that to ever change, I suggest you get your act together and learn how to be a little more professional.

And just as I stated in my e-mail, I'm spreading the word here, now, that IPOWER sucks and you should not buy from them.

But you don't have to take my word for it. Take a look at some reviews. Or some reviews. Maybe you'd like to read a few REVIEWS. Oh, did I mention the NEGATIVE REVIEWS?

This company sucks so bad, I'm not sure what's keeping them afloat. I am confident enough to say that the scattered positive reviews were either dumb luck or the work of corporate schills.

So, there you have it. Don't do business with this company, they suck.

Not always a good argument. Fuitadnet.com is fairly cheap, but they're an excellent hosting company. You don't get what you pay for all the time, you often get more/less, especially on the internet.

True, true

I am eating some pretty good noodles that are $.10 a pack

Indeed. DreamHost offers everything under the sun for quite cheap.

Godaddy is an excellent domain provider. I've never had an issue with them, and almost everything is automated.

Yeah, I was going to buy from them, but I went with NameCheap instead, since it was a few dollars cheaper after coupon codes.

Now...how do I make my domain point at my server address but be masked so that you don't see the IP, and instead see my domain?

You need to create an A record pointing domain.com and www.domain.com to the IP.

If you're on a shared server you need to set up a virtual host for the domain.

For this you need a nameserver. Does your registrar provide a configurable nameserver?

If not you can use http://freedns.afraid.org

Yeah, an A record is the first thing I tried, it worked but the IP still showed in my browser. And yeah, I'm familiar with FreeDNS, I use it all the time.

Ah, there we go, I got it.

I use Bluehost.

I've used GoDaddy for my personal domains and have had superior service. Even had a rep call me when I registered. Best hosting service, hands down. I'll go with them again when I scrap my current domain and go with a new one.
