Religion vs. Science
2006-07-03, 2:39 PM #1
This very concise and logical comparison of the two has recently been brought to my attention. The last cell reminds me of the song "Land" by Patti Smith ("Suddenly, Johnny, got the feeling, he's been surrounded by, horses.. horses.. horses.. horses").

This post has light-hearted intentions, and is dedicated to thoughtful, quirky web comics that make me happy. Feel free to direct the discussion towards pixel, other web comics you enjoy, or a more serious discussion of religion/science, and how they are not necessarily opposed to one another.

The first and second cell were alright.

But it really wasn't that funny. Not even the names.

Great comic, and it has some very good essays as well about how much other comics (Beetle Bailey, The Born Loser, Garfield, etc.) suck.

The fashionable thing in webcomics is to bash print comics for their lack of inventiveness and their staleness. It's a bit true, but they serve their purpose, and for the most part please their intended audience, so I've grown a bit tired of the bickering.

What do religous folks who believe God created Earth and the life on it, think about other planets with alien life?

Generally that alien life doesn't exist. At least if you mean religous to mean Judeo-Christian or Islamic. Plenty of Cosmic Hummanists believe in aliens, and some are rather obsessed with them.

Then I'd say a large amount of those people would find a way around it. Maybe saying that the life does not have self-awareness therefore it's not necessarily a matter of concern, etc, etc.. It doesn't really matter how much proof you have, simply because faith isn't built on proof, and sometimes not even reason.

theres more likely to be life on europa, than mars.

Interestingly, theres something called the Drake Equation.

It states that through probability of a planet having water, of specific temperate, etcetc etc, [lots of parameters] that 500,000 alien beings must exist in our Galaxy alone.

Thats a friggin big number.

I dont see any aliens, do u?

The Bible makes references to other worldy beings in the Old testement. Its the only interesting section of the book (no offence :p)

Really? Where, in what context? If you're referring to "celestial" beings, of course, but have you read something that you think might point to aliens? :psyduck:

Could you please show me a reference? Not trying to get on your case, I'm just curious. And as for the Old Testament being boring, well, let's just say I always skip the geneaologies when I get to them. New Testament ftw. :P

pft New Testement sucks. Jesus was boring. He never shot anyone or fragged a tank.

I remember hearing about it in Boarding school, religous studies.

My vague memorised reference.

Paraphrase:
"the Beings walked though the mountains with the faces of Eagles. AS they walked, all the animals of the valley would hide in fear, and the land fell silent."

Then more writing about Golden cities of metal that stood in the great desert but flew away.

I may be slightly mistaken, but i have a good memory, and i remember hearing this read from the old testement.

Yes.

*insert Erich von Däniken's theories* ;)

There's a -lot- of freaky stuff in the Ezechiel chapter. For example, this:

(Starting Ezechiel Chapter 1, verse 4.)
Ezekiel 1
The Living Creatures and the Glory of the Lord

(....)

4 I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light. The center of the fire looked like glowing metal, 5 and in the fire was what looked like four living creatures. In appearance their form was that of a man, 6 but each of them had four faces and four wings. 7 Their legs were straight; their feet were like those of a calf and gleamed like burnished bronze. 8 Under their wings on their four sides they had the hands of a man. All four of them had faces and wings, 9 and their wings touched one another. Each one went straight ahead; they did not turn as they moved.

10 Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a man, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle. 11 Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out upward; each had two wings, one touching the wing of another creature on either side, and two wings covering its body. 12 Each one went straight ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they went. 13 The appearance of the living creatures was like burning coals of fire or like torches. Fire moved back and forth among the creatures; it was bright, and lightning flashed out of it. 14 The creatures sped back and forth like flashes of lightning.

15 As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. 16 This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like chrysolite, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 17 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not turn about [d] as the creatures went. 18 Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around.

19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.

22 Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was what looked like an expanse, sparkling like ice, and awesome. 23 Under the expanse their wings were stretched out one toward the other, and each had two wings covering its body. 24 When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings, like the roar of rushing waters, like the voice of the Almighty, [e] like the tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.

25 Then there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads as they stood with lowered wings. 26 Above the expanse over their heads was what looked like a throne of sapphire, [f] and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him.
This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
Von Däniken claims this is one of the passages with an accurate description of aliens landing in a space ship, and using advanced methods of transports like Jetpacks or helicopter like things.

Really interesting stuff. There's more like this in Ezechiel. It even mentions those superbeings carrying 'weapons of destruction'.

How so? He seems to think that there is a need within science for religion. Religion doesn't aid science, I'd love to hear an argument as to why and how religion aids science. In the past it's cracked down on astronomers for finding the earth goes round the sun and it's still interfering with the teaching of evolution.
Sure, science needs ethics and social awareness, but it's annoying to equate religion with morality and understanding of societal issues. It suggests that only the religiously indoctrinated scientists are leading the way which is rather arrogant.

I've never needed religion, but I guess I could become one of those greedy 1200's priests some day. Or then not.

Then again, praying for something now and then ain't bad, no time wasting.

The simple answer is basically the reverse of the second part, either part without the other is blind. We all know the religious kooks who will disbelieve anything a scientists tell them are nuts, but while the opposite isn't as extreme (a scientist denying a preacher because there's no proof), eventually a scientist will come to a question of "Why..?" that he can't answer, and "just because" usually isn't a good answer.

I'm not saying religion has to exist and that all scientists accept it, I myself used the logic of "There's no proof, so it can't exist" line for years. I'm still on the fence, but I'm comfortable where I am. I'm just saying the quote makes sense, not trying to prove anything else.

Exactly, science and religion are two seperate things that shouldn't be compared to. The only reason it is an issue is that we often see religious motivated people try to stop science (evolution for example).

Yet science and religion are both things that cannot be proven, science for example is simply a collection of theories trying to help explain things, so there is no "____ has been proven"

Religion is similar but in a difference sence, as opposed to science it claims certainties ,e.g. "God created the earth" which is non-scientific and therefore should simply be placed as a different subject.

This is why Science vs. Religion shouldn't really exist, they are two seperate things, but when one tries to interfer with the other (Religion trying to stop scientific advances) then things get messy because of the nature of the differences of the two.

I don't see what difference it would make. At all. I don't think we'll find any sentient life, but I don't see why God wouldn't create some kind life on other planets.

So... Religion is just psychological games to trick the mind into thinking it's fulfilled?
