Damnit... Discovery Shuttle explosion

No one took offence, and yet the thread has descended into an incredibly petty argument. This is a waste of hard drive space.

Actually the argument has been over for a few hours and there was no need to bring it back up

I wouldn't say I took offense, but I did momentarily feel sympathy for the astronauts and their families. Therefore, I agree that it was in poor taste.

.

When I saw the thread I was like "****, there goes the space program."

Hopefully eventually and within our lifetimes, there will be a colony of some sorts, on another planet or at least on the moon.

No. This can be considered "normal."

I tend to not use a recent tragedy for comical value.

Why? It's just a stupid rock. After a bit, the novelity will wear out, and no one will want to be there any more.

You've got to start somewhere, and it's fairly close to the Earth. Why not set up a colony up there?

You could say the same for Earth. At least I would.

Could you possibly show yourself as more ignorant?

The moon has 1/6th the gravity of the earth, not to mention no atmosphere. That would make staging launches there incredibly easy, and would mean our equipment running down a lot less frequently. You could use up a lot less fuel in the process as well.

It's not "just a rock", it's the first stop to exploring our solar system, and then maybe even our galaxy.

Dj understands space exploration. :) Last time I checked (yesterday) NASA was planning on using the ISS as a base for a mission to set up a moon colony, and using the moon as a base for possible Mars missions.

The lack of atmosphere bothers me a bit though for bases (for launching and such) and colonies. Space debri would be a LOT more common and damage things left and right no?

Eh, not really--most space debris isn't as far out as the Moon and is orbiting the earth. As for random space stuff, that's not as common as you'd think.
