How ironic--the first "flying car" doesn't even have a spoiler.

I bet if you put some small wings on that one guy's Beatle that has a turbojet engine in it, you could take off no problem.

You've never heard the "If that car had a bigger spoiler it'd take off" joke before?

Yeah, spoilers are meant to decrease lift and thus increase traction...
2006-07-05, 10:54 PM #12
No spoiler!
2006-07-05, 10:56 PM #13
A lot of the big obnoxious things you see on the back of cars aren't spoilers anyway, they're wings, and that thing obviously has wings, so yeah...

What the hell was that?
Have you not seen pics of the real flying car? It has ducted fans, and doesn't fly worth a flip.
Popular Science has done several articles over the years about this car.

I saw something about that on TV a while ago, but I thought they had already made it take off...
Nothing to see here, move along.

The Skycar has done a couple of low-level (i.e. a few feet off the ground) tethered "flights", but the development has been extremely slow. I still have the Popular Science issue from 1997 (I believe) that claimed those things would be on the market by 2003 or so.

Dante: ALRIGHT! I'll go through with the deal. I'll let the German scientist hack my foot off, then him and his friends can have their way with me, all for the flying car.

Randal: You'd do it with a bunch of guys just to get a car? I thought I knew you man.

Spoilers are upside down wings.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

i hate all of you.
2006-07-06, 11:21 AM #28
Neither, wings are wings, spoilers are spoilers. Spoilers are meant to "spoil" the aerodynamics of a car to cut down on lift, and are not wing shaped. Wings on cars are wings, but are upside down and thus generate more downforce.

First's a spoiler, second's a wing.
