Buying a digital camera

I was looking to get a digital camera for college and I don't know anything about them. I was going to see if any of you own any that you'd recommend or if you just know a lot about it.

I'll probably be taking pictures of me and friends, electronic components for my website, or just places. I won't need anything that can take images of fast moving objects from airshows with perfect clarity and I'm most certainly not a photojournalist.

I'm a newbie to taking pictures and cameras both.

I'm looking to spend less than $300 but probably more than $100 (at least to say I don't want something that won't last).

I'm willing to read the manual!

I bought this one for my girlfriend the Christmas before last. There may be better ones out there now but it's quite good for a non-DSLR.
