If games could only use one engine from now on...

Which engine would you pick? I'm curious.

I'd go with the Source engine version thats being used for TF2.

Its near photorealistic (if not completely, at times) has HDR, phong lighting, and all the other neato effects found in DoD.

QUAKE 3!

Heh, personally I'd go with anything that isn't source.
nope.

I would go for Unreal simply because of it's brush system and lighting.

Not to forget seeing lighting in-editor.

Is there a reason? Like your system isn't fast enough? Or do you assume Source engine = HL2?

I've just yet to play something on it that I liked the feel of.

I'm going to specify my vote now and go for Unreal 3.
nope.

DooM 3. Maybe it's the item activation, or just how kick *** Prey was, but I like the engine.

Maybe because Source is Quake I with new, third party technology tacked on? And is, underneath, a steaming pile of crap?

I would chose Unreal 3 or one if its derivatives, perhaps Crysis.

Whatever engine that new Jedi game coming out next year is on. :ninja:

Of course, I'm basing my choice off of a small video clip....but it's love at first sight, I tell you. :)

Haha, that'd be so awesome if somebody made (and sold) a new game with that engine.

Yeah, too bad the engine has been branded with the name of an ill-received game.
2006-07-23, 3:26 PM #24
The game was just a tech-demo for the engine. I bet licensing is where id makes most of their money.

Hey, it IS rather nice. Considering. I mean, yeah UE3 and Crysis are 100x more detailed than Source, but they won't run quite as nicely on my x850XT PE. ;)

I had a blog. It sucked.

What's funny is that the people who have the least amount of experience with 3D engines and asset development are the people who argue in favor of Source. Makes you think.

Joke answer: Anything except that Steam(tm)ing pile of crap.
Real answer: Unreal Engine 3+.

Just kidding.

-Quake 3.

I personally couldn't care less what engine a game uses. If the final game is fun to play, that's good enough.

I change my vote.
.werkkzeug

I just like the 'feel' and 'look' of the Source engine.

I guess I should have limited my question to engines that are actually used in games that are on store shelves. Oh well.

Aurora.

What? I LOVE NWScript.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Naw, really, I like Source's feel, but I'm interested in the future of UE3.

You think Unreal Tournament 2007, BioShock, Gears of War, Rainbox Six 5, Too Human and Mass Effect don't exist? Er... okay then. :v:

If we're limiting it to engines that actually have completed games behind them, then I will choose Unreal Engine 2.5.
