Good idea?

Here's a helpful tip I saw in a GeekSquad advert in a magazine.

Quote:
REMOVING SPILLAGE FROM A KEYBOARD

In the event you spill coffee, soda or a recreational beverage of another type on your keyboard, here's an easy way to clean it up:

1) Unplug the keyboard from your desktop

2) Place it key-side down in the dishwasher

3) Run a wash cycle with no heat

4) Lay it key-side down on a towel to dry

Now, I never heard this suggestion before for washing a keyboard. I'm not sure how sensitive a keyboard is with water, especailly from the dishwasher. Would it work?

A good idea?

I think licking it clean would be safer. . .though, that sounds mighty gross.

If its completely dry befor you turn it on again im pretty sure it should be fine.

Any guarantees it will come out alright? I'd try it on an old keyboard first.

It would probably be just fine as long as there aren't any kind of electrontics in the keyboard.

If the keyboard is ruined in the first place, it can't hurt :p

Just make sure you leave it to COMPLETELY dry.

Of course, an easier method would be to just buy a new keyboard >.>

I depends on the type of keyboard I would think. If it's one of the modern c***tastic thin-plastic-sheet types with one or two IC chips, then I have no doubt that they could survive a Dish-Washer. But if it's an old-school IBM Clicky-Keyboard, no, I probably would not survive.

Plus, new keyboards are only $5 or so these days (For the cheap type), so unless you have a really good keyboard, your not really risking much.

Huh? These old-school IBM keyboards could survive anything!

The only things to survive nuclear winter will be cockroaches and IBM keyboards.

I once spilt beer all over my keyboard. It was one of those with two plastic films that were pressed together by the key to cause electrical contact. The beer managed to get between the two sheets and must have shorted out a load of the contacts because my computer thought a load of keys were being pressed constantly.

Took it apart, wiped it clean and left to dry.
Re-assembled, tested, dis-assembled, re-assembled correctly, tested and all was fine.

Managed to take the keys off and give them all a good scrub in the bath at the same time.

That's what I'd do too. No way am I going "Oops, I just spilt something on my keyboard, I'd better go rinse it out..."
