Problem with Hercule Prophet 9800 Pro
2004-06-24, 4:11 PM #1
My friend just bought this card for his new computer, and there's a couple things I'm concerned about. We downloaded the lastest Radeon drivers, and installed and loaded up Far Cry. In game there is a bit of skipping which happens every so often, and sometimes a big drop in framerate for no reason. Also, the only resolutions the game can run at is 800x600 or 1024x768. Same for the Windows desktop. To me this doesn't seem like typical 9800 Pro behavior, especially with the system he's running. For a processor he's running at Athlon XP 3000+, and he has 512MB of PC2700 RAM. I find it even more suspicious because before we tried running my 9600XT in his PC, and it ran Far Cry perfectly smooth without any problems whatsoever. Any help is appreciated.

I'd suggest sending it in, getting a new one, and seeing if your problems get fixed. No use keeping a card that may/may not give you endless problems.

Update the drivers? That's generally a main problem - when my computer shut down every time I made a resolution change with my 9200, I thought it was a problem with the mobo, but just getting the latest drivers off the 'net was suitable and I managed to get it working fine.

Did you do a driver cleaning before installing the new drivers? Anytime I install new drivers, I clean out the old ones.

- Uninstall through Add/Remove in Control Panel
- Boot into safe mode
- Use Driver Cleaner
- Reboot
- Install new drivers.

If your problems persist, I'd suggest taking it back/RMAing.

Remember, you have to have the HERCULES ATi drivers installed, not the ATi Catalyst. Find them on the Hercules site.

That's probably the problem then. I'm using the Catalysts off of ati.com.

RMA it and get a new one. It's obviously a debunk card.
