So I spotted a link to the demo of this on the CAD main page, and I downloaded it out of boredom and curiosity and it could be the best PC shooter I've played in a long time.
First off, it's a western! And my god does it just have the gritty feel of a western, the atmosphere is just great, I can't really describe it. You can play as 2 opposing characters in the game, the demo has one level of each characters story, Reverend Ray, a reformed outlaw who brushes off his old six shooters at the start his level, or Billy, not much know about him besides the fact that he uses a whip, and his level was more stealth orientated.
Right, the gameplay when palying with Ray is just freaking kickass. You're equipped with his 2 six-shooters, left and right, and either mouse button fires a corresponding weapon. This creates an added degree of awareness since you have to keep an eye on what gun has how much ammo. Ray also gets a function known as concentration where you can holster both guns, then press the fire button; Ray goes into a bullet-time esque mode as he raises his guns and you get 2 crosshairs coming in from either side for each weapon, making use of the firing system where the right mouse button fires the right hand-cannon and the left fires the left. Handy for clearing a small number of foes in a room. Concentration end when both crosshairs hit the centre of the screen and become one again.
The last Ray specific feature is the quick draw duel, which is only utilised once in the demo. Basically, in the duel you're stuck on the spot, a counter counts down, then at the signal you have to move the mouse down then back up to grab your gun. Since you're stuck in the spot, the mouse now moves the crosshair about the screen, and the obvious objective is to kill the other guy first. This mode also makes nice use of the Q and E buttons, which allow the character to lean from side to side.
Billy's level you can play in the demo is based on avoiding confrontation. It makes use of basic sneaking about, retrieving something etc. and then horse riding for much of the level, which involves some accuracy or you'll find yourself falling off a cliff, like me. Once or twice however you get to use Billy's whip, for the obvious attacking, or for the move enjoyable use of swinging between branches and things, over large drops.
The game also seems to make some nice uses of physics, there seems to be an endless supply of things that can be picked up and maneuvered, to add to your cover in a gunfight, or as part of a small puzzle to get to places. Balconies can kicked out to jump between "roofs" [I don't know what you'd call them. Those wooden shelter things that stick out over the boardwalks.] and doors can be kicked in.
Anyways, it's definately getting bought when it's out. Grab the demo here!
Sorry for it being fileplanet.
