How long do you think it will last?

I voted for "Whenever Bush is NOT in power"

I figure it will slowly trickle out after the next election.

3 years untill the gradual pull out reatches the point where we can say we are no longer IN the war in Iraq...

Either that or whever we get around to declaring a war on {Iran|North Korea|Mexico|The entire middle east...}.

I voted 2 years. Maybe that's too optimistic, but I'm sure there would be better objects to invest all that money into. Like space and other scientific research.

I don't know if Iraq can ever become a real, solid country like this, no matter how many years the US forces stay there. Maybe they would need to be allowed to fight a bloody civil war to settle things for themselves, if that's what they desire. Many countries did that, and are now just fine and coherent, like the USA and Finland.

It will never really end. It will segueway seamlessly into some other war in the Middle East.

Couple more years, maybe, if we're talking about the point at which there are no longer US soldiers serving in Iraq.

Well, seeing as this thread comes on the same day as these depressing comments from the top US general I think anything less than 3 years is a stretch.

Our imperator will not rest until the region is pacified.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

You mean laws that prevent growth on those fronts. Remember, it's our dear conservative America.

That's not comparable at all, because the Germans and Japanese actually wanted to rebuild their countries, while Iraqis are busy bombing to rubble whatever buildings they still have left standing over there.

I think only a select few keep blowing up civilians and such, weren't there resistance movements in Germany/Japan that kept hounding the soldiers and everyone else as well? But you're right, the insurgency in this case is bigger.

It was my impression that these were foreign agents of Al Qaeda that were responsible for the acts of violence, with a little support of former Ba'ath Sunnites.

A year and a half. 2008 and we're out of there. That is, if we're leaving Iraq peacefully. Realistically it'll be after a conflict with Iran.

It'll take ages.

Should we rush leaving Afghanistan? We're just now paying the price for becoming involved in the Soviet Afghan Conflict. We left them literally in the stone ages, I don't think it'll hurt us to do something right and stay there until we can at least see them progress as a society a little.

He's right. With the way Iran has been funding/supplying terrorists groups, how nuclear enrichment sites pop up and suddenly vanish after being exposed, Iran seems to be begging for confrontation. If some form of confrontation doesn't occur, parts of the region will go up in a mushroom cloud, which will also lead to a confrontation.
